Series Information:

The "districts" and "areas" series is based upon my Developments Maps (see above for link). It is designed to allow discussion on the district in general and provide a place for smaller developments in the area to have a place to be discussed. Larger projects will have a seperate thread that will be linked to this post in the space above.

This thread is the third of the series and will focus on the Sackville area. This area consists of all of the Halifax Regional Municipality west of Highway 102 and east of Highway 101.

Case 16416 - Application by Whimsical Lake Developments Limited to enter into a development agreement to allow a multiple unit dwelling that exceeds 50 feet in height at 249 Sackville Drive, Sackville.
249 Sackville is across from Payzant's in the Sportwheels/Cars 'R Us stretch

Thats all of the information thats available right now however with this in mind I have a personal opinion question;

In Suburban areas like Sackville, Cole Harbour, and Bedford should mid to high rise buildings be allowed where land is available or should they be required to cluster along higher capacity roads like Sackville Drive? Also how should car-oriented and pedestrian-oriented commercials areas be laid out? (PS HalifaxboyNS this came from our discussion in Calgary about where things like car lots should be located)

There's also the development of the new Lawton's drug store where the Downsview Motel currently stands. I believe that one is getting ready to start relatively soon.

And damn, wish I could make it to that meeting, Sackville has a lot of opportunity with the amount of people that live here and around it.

Both links are for the new residential development in Lower Sackville. I'll post the renderings later on but basically its two 4 storey suburban looking buildings on a common podium for a total of 5 storeys.

Increase in residential, business development a Sackville boom
Published on October 20th, 2010
Bobbie-Lynn Hall

As Sackville continues to see steady residential growth, more businesses are now knocking, and area councillor Bob Harvey is happy to answer the door.

“The level of recent development activity shows that the Sackville area is attractive to investors and results in an important increase in economic activity,” said Harvey, who represents District 20 Lower Sackville. “It amounts to a vote of confidence in Sackville as a good place to do business.”

Those medians that they put in are so freaking annoying, in heavy traffic when you have a lot of people turning not everyone can fit on the median and they block the second lane.

They have to stop building new office/professional space in Sackville in my opinion. There are so many vacant spots along Sackville Dr. in the existing strip malls and there are vacancies in some of the newer buildings on Sackville Dr. and Cobequid Rd.

What we really need in Sackville is a used car or a pizza place- I have a hard time finding either

Single Sackville plan not popular
911 concerns not enough to convince residents of need for name change
By MICHAEL LIGHTSTONE City Hall Reporter
Mon, Jan 10 - 4:06 PM

Quote:
How would you feel if the name of your community suddenly changed?

Residents in the Lower Sackville area of Halifax Regional Municipality have been receiving notices from city hall asking them for feedback on a proposed district name change.
According to veteran councillor Bob Harvey, the renaming process is part of a municipal program that has been going on for seven years in various areas.

“It is mainly driven by public safety issues related to 911 emergency response,” Harvey, who represents Lower Sackville, said in a recent email interview.

“We need clear community boundaries understood and proper civic addresses.”

He said “one option was to have (the) name of Sackville for the entire community” of Lower, Middle and Upper Sackville. But the councillor said “it doesn’t seem that popular, particularly in Middle and Upper Sackville.”

Harvey said he has, so far, received only one phone call about the district naming matter.

Dave Grimshire, who has lived on Millwood Drive for 15 years, said he has concerns about any planned name changes affecting his home. He said he has provided feedback to municipal staff but has not spoken with his councillor, Brad Johns (Middle and Upper Sackville-Lucasville).

Grimshire, a Dalhousie University technician who lives on the border of Lower and Middle Sackville, said one of the issues of concern involves his mailing address.

“I’m really on the Middle Sackville side, but my postal address is Lower Sackville,” he said last week. “And I’m close to Beaver Bank — so where do I live?”

Regarding public safety, Grimshire said from his perspective, “there’s no reason to change Lower Sackville and Middle Sackville into just Sackville just because you want 911 clarity. There isn’t another Millwood Drive — I don’t think — in HRM.”

Harvey reiterated that there doesn’t appear to be much appetite for using the name Sackville for all three bedroom communities.

“One outcome of this will be welcome signs to the communities,” he said in his email reply. “It appears the distinctive historic names of Upper, Middle and Lower will remain.”

Sackville Drive development cancelled
By BILL POWER Business Reporter
Fri, Jan 14 - 4:54 AM

Quote:

Realco Management Ltd. in Halifax has pulled the plug on a planned four-building commercial development on Sackville Drive.

The company has asked North West community council to cancel a development agreement obtained for the 3.3-acre property in Lower Sackville that allowed for four buildings with limited commercial uses.

"Realco no longer wishes to proceed with this development and would like to revert back to the underlying R-6 (rural residential) zoning," said a municipal staff report.

The company received approval of a development agreement in 2006 on the property on the south side of Sackville Drive near Lucasville Road.

Community council is expected to vote on the property zoning at its next scheduled meeting.

The property previously had an R-6 designation.

The staff report notes community council could allow the commercial component to remain in place or decide that the property revert back to its previous designation.

"Development on the property would remain subject to the conditions of the development agreement," said the report.

Realco Property did not respond to inquiries about the future of the property.
I live right by this property I kinda wish they would keep it commercial as this area needs more commercial buildings now with all the subdivisions going up around it.

Lower, Middle and Upper Sackville to become official community names
Published on June 29, 2011
By Kim Moar – The Weekly News

Quote:
Although recognized since the 1700s, the communities of Lower, Middle and Upper Sackville are only now become official in HRM.
Even though Canada Post and the province recognizes the three distinct communities, currently the only community name on record in HRM is Sackville.
That’s about to change.
