Nova Scotia Webcams website

I think most people on this forum are familiar with the Nova Scotia Webcams website - http://www.novascotiawebcams.com/hal...aterfront.html . There was a story in the allnovascotia.com about this website (March 27th, 2013). According to the story it gets 15 million page views per year - 40% from Nova Scotia, 20% from the USA and the remaining 40% from across Canada and the rest of the world (further broken down as 4% from the UK and 3% from Germany).

The website is maintained by a Ralph Pickart who is originally from Germany. It was launched in 2009 and the office is in Herring Cove, NS. His title is Chief Webcam Guy.

I think this is a great source of free tourism exposure for the province. I view it several times a week.

I check it at least daily. I can check for snow, or rain in other parts of town. I also check up on the cruise ships; if I see that there is a lot in or something very unusual, I head over to see them in person. I also love to watch the waterfront boardwalk, and traffic on various routes. Like watching the Armdale round about.

I love the site...especially the time-lapse part of it. Since the weather changes so much in a single day, it's great to see the transitions

The live feed with sound is great.

I see that Peggy's Cove is live also http://www.novascotiawebcams.com/sou...ighthouse.html; I just wish it had sound since it would be great to hear the big waves coming in and hitting the rocky shore.

Apparently the Masstown webcam captured the fireball (meteorite) that landed somewhere over New Brunswick early this morning.

I just checked that webcam out. You can really get a sense of the wind and snow from the live sound feed. Hopefully for the sake of Haligonians, the snow will be gone within a few days.

I'm hoping it will be gone by Friday so that my plane from Toronto will land safely

It's quite late in the year. The forecast is calling for +12 for Halifax in a couple of days.

I have some 1981-2010 climate data from Environment Canada and it lists how many snow storms of a given size you can expect during each month. A snow storm >= 25 cm only happens, on average, once every 10 years in March (0.10 per year). The average number of storms in April is 0 -- there were no snowstorms >= 25 cm of snow in April between 1981 and 2010 (the probability of >= 10 cm is 0.05, so once every 20 years).

It's interesting to think about how accurate these numbers really are with climate change. The overall climate in Halifax went up by about 0.3 C from the 1971-2000 to the 1981-2010 period, but the variability in weather events may have gone up as well. Maybe events like this will become more common in the future, even though the average winter day will be a bit warmer.

They also now have a live webcam of the Halifax waterfront from King's Wharf streaming on facebook:

And here's a 4 hour loop of the Westin's new rotating webcam from yesterday (may 13th) in the sun:

Nice find. The Westin Hotel one is fantastic, especially on a clear day like today.
