'Kay...Question:

Why is that platform underneath the cantilever? It gives construction process-unenlightened forumers like me the impression that the tower's engineers are somehow hedging their bets on the cantilever holding up on its own.

I love this towers height, we need now a 2000-2599 ft tower in NYC; screw the FAA. I'm still sour and will never get over the failed Chicago Spire. We need a 2k plus tower in the states.

2,000' building unlikely as long as the FAA enforces its height limit.

Even the Sky Needle was supposed to be 1999' and 11" to stay under the 2000' limit.

2,000 is the height limit though, anything over that would be less likely (unless a special case were made).

It'd be nice to see 1,800-2,000 someday although after a certain point I don't think height matters much anymore.

I'm a huge fan of the Central Park Tower because I think it has a nice looking design (though not the best) and it's an absolute colossus.

I agree, for two reasons:

1) IMO 1WTC doesn't deserve the title of "Tallest building outside Asia", because it relies overly on its humongous spire to achieve its structural height. I wouldn't mind so much if it were a more interesting spire, but it's just a skinny rod.

2) So far several 2000-footers have been approved for construction in the US, but none got built. It would be nice to finally have a 2000-footer that gets completed.

It would have to be requested to exceed it. Special studies and approval, but it can be done. Would be the 1st in the U.S. aside from COM towers with respect to a mega tall or habitat structure.

My guess would be that the crane is still hovering way above the cantilever, adding extra safety should something fall straight down. However, I'm pretty sure it'll be taken down by year's end once they finish the crown in a month or so!
