Two-thirds of New Taipei COVID patients asymptomatic

People without symptoms should also get tested for COVID: Mayor Hou

By Matthew Strong, Taiwan News, Staff Writer

(Taiwan News) — Up to 66 percent of new COVID-19 cases in New Taipei City are asymptomatic, forming a worrying chain of transmission, Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) said Wednesday (June 16).

The trend means there is no lag between a person being infected and being confirmed as a coronavirus case, UDN reported. Speaking at a city government meeting, the mayor said that such a high number of asymptomatic cases should convince even more people to go get tested.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, New Taipei City has seen more than 5,000 COVID cases. It has also recorded the highest number of new cases since the local surge in mid-May.

Local health officials have emphasized the importance of early discovery to preventing the spread of the virus. Mobile rapid-testing teams have been traveling around the city, visiting Jinshan District on the north coast Wednesday.

During last weekend's three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, 2,000 tests in New Taipei City produced 10 to 15 asymptomatic cases per day, while 4,000 tests conducted Tuesday (June 15) turned up 17 cases without symptoms, Hou said.

COVID-19: Councilor apologizes for ‘prison’ comments

By Jason Pan / Staff reporter

Taipei City Councilor Miao Po-ya (苗博雅) on Thursday apologized for saying that the nation was “serving time in prison” with Taipei and New Taipei City amid a nationwide level 3 COVID-19 alert.

Miao, of the Social Democratic Party, made the comments on Monday last week on a TV political talk show in response to the level 3 alert being extended to June 28.

All Taiwanese are “serving time in prison” with Taipei and New Taipei City, she said.

“Looking at Taipei and New Taipei City, the infection rate has leveled to a flat trend over the past three weeks, but it is still not moving downward. Therefore, our entire nation is in a level 3 alert. It is unfortunate, because if you can imagine Taipei and New Taipei City as a smouldering furnace, some sparks could fly outward to Taoyuan, Miaoli County and other regions, spreading the fire,” she said.

Her remarks generated a backlash, with some saying she was tarnishing her own city, while others said she had political motives in making the comments.

“No one wants to get infected,” Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said on Wednesday.

“We are still in a stressful situation due to the COVID-19 outbreak. There is no need to talk about it in this way,” he added.

Miao apologized on Facebook.

“It was not my intention to blame Taipei residents,” she wrote.

She said that her comments about “serving time in prison” with the cities were due to her “negative emotions” in wishing that the Taipei City Government could have done a better job.

“Most people of our nation have followed up and complied with the disease prevention measures, but the city government did not manage the situation well, and did not make the best use of its resources to combat the outbreak effectively. The results are not fair to the public,” she said.

14 homeless at Taipei Main Station, Bangka Park diagnosed with COVID

City officials test homeless at Taipei Main Station after 3 seek medical treatment for COVID symptoms

By Keoni Everington, Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2021/06/23 13:03

(Taiwan News) — A total of 14 homeless people living around Taipei Main Station and Bangka Park have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Three homeless people who dwell around Taipei Main Station recently tested positive for the virus, prompting officials to test 169 more homeless individuals and their contacts in the area. As a result, five more homeless have tested positive.

According to the Taipei City Department of Social Welfare, three homeless people living near the station had sought medical treatment after they began to feel unwell. After they were diagnosed with COVID-19, the department arranged for 169 homeless people and contacts to be tested, reported UDN.

Five were confirmed to have the virus, bringing the total of infected homeless people living in the vicinity of the station to eight. Of these, three have been admitted to a hospital, while five others have been placed in epidemic prevention hotels.

Meanwhile, six homeless people in Bangka Park in Taipei's Wanhua District have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Their contacts have been listed, and arrangements have been made for them to stay in epidemic prevention hotels.

The majority of the homeless in these areas have been placed in quarantine and will be released after they receive a negative PCR test result or if they test positive but with a Ct value over 30.

Given that there is significant pedestrian traffic where many of the capital's homeless sleep, the department considers them a priority group for vaccination. On Tuesday (June 22), the department announced that it is generating a list of 700 homeless individuals to vaccinate.

Fullon Hotel Taipei, Central to close in September

Pandemic pressures lead to hotel closure

By George Liao, Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2021/06/21 20:10

(Taiwan News) — Fullon Hotels & Resorts made a public statement on Monday (June 21) that its Fullon Hotel Taipei, Central branch will close in September at the expiration of its lease due to the pandemic, CNA reported.

Fullon Hotels & Resorts said it rented an old office building from Taiwan Sugar Corp. in 2006, spending heavily to convert it into Fullon Hotel Taipei, Central.

The hotel chain said that in the past year and a half, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a great many lives and destroyed numerous businesses around the world, with the hotel industry among the hardest hit.

The hotel chain pointed out that it struggled through 2020 amid border closures and travel restrictions only to encounter a worse maelstrom in 2021, with the pandemic finally reaching Taiwan and necessitating a Level 3 alert. The cost of the lease eventually became too heavy a burden, which led the company to wind down operations at Fullon Hotel Taipei, Central, one of the chain's two branches in the capital.

However, all other Fullon Hotels & Resorts destinations around Taiwan will continue to operate. The employees of the soon-to-close branch will be reassigned to other branches or enterprises under the parent company, Lih Pao Group, according to the company.

Taipei Agricultural Products cluster infection explodes to 45 cases

Taipei sets up command post to test, vaccinate 4,300 workers from fruit and vegetables wholesaler

By Keoni Everington, Taiwan News, Staff Writer

(Taiwan News) — A COVID-19 cluster infection involving the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation (TAPMC, 臺北農產運銷公司) rocketed to 45 cases on Sunday (June 20).

At a press briefing on Sunday, the Taipei City Department of Economic Development (DED, 台北市政府產業發展局) announced that 20 TAPMC employees, 18 wholesale market workers, and seven dispatch workers had contracted COVID. Out of the 20 employees, nine are not based in Taipei and had traveled to other municipalities such as New Taipei City and Keelung City, where epidemiological investigations are also being carried out.

Wang Pi-sheng (王必勝), head of the Hospital and Social Welfare Administration Commission under the Ministry of Health and Welfare went to TAPMC that day and agreed to a plan drawn up by Taipei City Government to deal with the cluster infection. At 8 a.m. on Monday (June 21), Taipei City Government set up a command post to carry out traffic flow and environmental infection controls, and to rapidly screen personnel.

Also on Monday, Taipei Deputy Mayor Vivian Huang (黃珊珊) said the city has a two-pronged plan to prevent the further spread of the virus among company staff. First, 451 TAMPC employees who have tested negative for the virus will be vaccinated.

Second, those who have not yet been tested will undergo rapid screening and if the results are negative, they will be vaccinated. Huang said that rapid screening and vaccinations will be carried out as swiftly as possible on 4,300 TAPMC employees, wholesale market workers, and dispatch workers.

Irishman dies on Taipei street, tests positive for COVID

Four police officers enter quarantine after trying to treat COVID-positive Irishman who died on Taipei street

By Keoni Everington, Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2021/06/28 11:55

(Taiwan News) — An Irishman who suddenly collapsed and died on a street in Taipei City on Saturday night (June 26) has been diagnosed with COVID-19, while the five police officers who came in contact with him have entered quarantine.

At about 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, a 58-year-old Irishman was seen walking along the sidewalk wearing a black T-shirt and shorts near the intersection of Kangding Road and Neijing Street in the Ximending area of Taipei's Wanhua District. He wandered off the sidewalk in an apparent effort to cross the street.

He then began to stagger and seemed to try to run back to the sidewalk, before suddenly collapsing and lying motionless on the street. Bystanders who witnessed the man fall called 119 and when officers arrived at the scene, they found that he was not breathing and had no pulse.

A police officer identified by the surname Lo (羅) called for an ambulance and followed paramedic instructions on implementing CPR as they waited for the arrival of the rescue vehicle, reported SET News. When paramedics arrived on the scene, they quickly rushed him to the National Taiwan University Hospital.

Despite efforts by paramedics to resuscitate the man, he died before they were able to reach the hospital. Once at the hospital, a PCR test was administered on the deceased man and he was diagnosed with COVID-19 at 9 p.m. that evening.

After receiving notice the man had been diagnosed with COVID-19, Ximending Police Station immediately sent the four officers who tended to the man into quarantine. The station and surrounding area were disinfected and the remaining 26 police officers from the station are now undergoing self-health monitoring.

According to the police station, the four officers received a first round of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in late May. Before returning to the station, the four had taken steps to disinfect themselves to prevent the spread of the virus.

The deceased man reportedly had a history of hypertension and obesity. He had been living in Taiwan for at least six years, resided with his girlfriend, and had not recently traveled abroad.

The cause of the man's death is not yet known and an investigation will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
