Proximity to Public Parks

How far is your home from a public park space?

Park spaces may be defined as any space which appears on Google maps (or similar) as a public park. You do not have to identify the park.

Less than 50m when I lived in Ottawa. 200m now as the crow flies.

It seems that most of us don't have far to go, 400 meters is a five minute walk. Proximity to parks can be seen as one measure of urbanity, an important indicator of quality of life, and has a negative association with poor health and obesity. In suburban or rural areas parks are less important, and are more likely to be somewhere you drive to rather than walk, with locations often determined by natural features rather than accessibility.

Here is a map showing proximity to parks in Vancouver:

Using Google (which doesn't seem to know the walking shortcuts - so you can chop a bit off these totals)...

I am 700m from the nearest park, but it's a silly little thing:

I'm 900m from the nearest large park, but it's just a field:

And I'm 1.1km from the nearest large, landscaped park, Bannerman Park. It's where I'd go to ropewalk (if I did that), hammock, skate in winter, swim, etc.

I unfortunately left a gap between 500m and 1 km, perhaps ruining it for a large segment of the population, but you can choose the closest one.
