Seating capacity doesn't change, that tarp is used for OHL games to cover the upper bowl.

a little short on details right now. I need to see more than a slick rendering and a press release to really be sold by it all.

The Calgary Flames first home is starting to come down now, removal of seating and equipment is fully underway. The Corral was built in 1950 and hosted the Flames for 3 seasons before the Saddledome was finished. Next up will be the Saddledome, in about 5 years if the new arena stays on schedule.

^ I still think it's too bad they aren't doing a major refresh of the Saddledome versus just replacing it.

It is such a cool structure - seems like a waste.

I get that it can't handle some concerts - but several hundred million $$ could really have made that place shine.

Interesting that Calgary is getting rid of both the Corral and the Saddledome. So what will be the next biggest arena left after the new Flames rink is built?

I would have thought that in a city as big as Calgary that there would be a market for a substantial secondary arena like the Corral.

The Flames organization have a lot of weight in the city and they are highly likely to block than support the idea of a second, competing venue regardless if the city would benefit from one.

Both the Saddledome and the Corral need millions in upgrades, and the Corral is the site of the future BMO CEntre spaceship, so it needs to come down to make room for that. Also, the Flames don't want any revenue competition for the new building. Calgary doesn't really need 2 NHL size arenas unless we host another Olympics, and we already shot that down...

Can't find any other sport thread but the Feds have said no to other teams playing in Toronto against the Jays.

Fine by me. Baseball is different than how hockey is doing it with the bubble and all teams in one city, not travelling every couple days. No fans allowed in the games, so it doesn't really matter to me where they are playing when I see them on TV.

Will be curious to see how the Jays go forward from here though. Do they use Buffalo, or Dunedin as their home? Or since it's going to suck any way they do it, what if they just play in the other team's park as the home team? They are only playing in the east anyway, not like there is a lot of cross contintental travel. 2 in Washington 2 in Toronto turns into 4 in Washington. September would be 2 in Miami, 4 in Boston, 9 in New York (Yankees, Mets and Yankees), 3 in Philadelphia, 4 back in New York and finish with 3 in Baltimore. Not exactly heavy sledding. No matter where they set up for "home", they will be living in hotels anyway.

I agree. Since there are no fans, the Jays could be playing in Dunedin New Zealand and it wouldn't make any difference whatsoever.

Peterborough group looking to build 3,000 capacity stadium for League 1 Ontario team with CPL aspirations. Could use Justin Chiu Stadium at Trent University until ready.

I really liked the CGI stadium for the opening game last night. A lot better than looking out into pure darkness and provides a lot of opportunity for sponsor and league activation.

Tim Hortons Field repairs on hold as city wants province to cover $1.1 million cost

https://y108.ca/news/7324421/tim-hortons-field-repairs/

Hamilton city councillors continue to balk at spending $1.1 million on a “worsening safety concern” at Tim Hortons Field.

Councillors voted 12 to 1, during a meeting of the General Issues Committee on Wednesday, to defer needed repairs for another two weeks to receive legal advice and to pressure Infrastructure Ontario (IO) to pay for what they argue are construction-related deficiencies.

At issue are the guard rails that surround the upper bowl stands and line the stairways of the six-year-old stadium.

The perimeter end guards, as they are referred to in a staff report, were found to be deteriorating during a safety review that was carried out after a 250-pound speaker, about the size of a bar fridge, fell from a light standard into empty stands in 2016.
