Bit too far from the city for the view to be as good as it could be. It would be amazing from Governor's Island. But then, of course, the wheel itself is a bit of an eyesore, so there are pluses and minuses.

The point of it is not to view the skyline - that can be done in Manhattan from various decks - but to offer a different experience as well as a view over the harbor from which it will rise.

It will become a New York landmark and an icon, that itself making it a draw. It will offer an experience New York currently does not have.

The city is currently breaking records in tourism, the crowds keep coming. There must always be something new in New York, the city should never stop thinking and creating new. With the Staten Island ferry itself reaching new numbers, this attraction will be a natural.

Seeing those anchors in place I can now envision the thing standing exactly where it will be. It really is a major milestone for the whole development.

I see the NY Wheel as an anchor for Staten Island.
Let's face it, we don't see any skyscraper development happening in Staten Island at the moment, but the NY Wheel might be the catalyst to future development.

The cost of the New York Wheel has swelled to $590 million as the St. George attraction's opening is delayed until next year

Quote:
There was a time when Staten Islanders expected to have bragging rights to the world's tallest Ferris wheel by early 2017. With the 630-foot New York Wheel as the centerpiece of development on the St. George waterfront, the city's most underappreciated borough likely would have more pull as a tourist destination.

But as the wheel's streaming cam shows, it has not been erected yet. Its opening has been postponed until the spring of 2018. Meanwhile, the price tag for the complex project has swelled from $230 million to $590 million.

Riders could be the ones covering those costs. According to The Real Deal, a ticket once was pitched at $15. Now wheel operators plan to charge $35 for standard admission. It would take nearly 16.9 million rides to cover that budget, although wheel operators don't expect ride tickets to be the sole income stream. Some 85% of revenue is projected to come from standard tickets, with the remainder to come from events held in the wheel's pods.

Construction, though slow, is moving along. A few weeks ago, the wheel's pedestals arrived at St. George after traveling down the Erie Canal from Quebec. The legs are scheduled to rise this year, along with the wheel itself, and by the end of the year, the live cam should be showing the full Ferris wheel being prepped for action in the spring.

New general manager of NY Wheel helped create Universal Studios

By Tracey Porpora
January 23, 2017

Quote:
The new general manager for the 60-story observation wheel being built on the St George waterfront wants to make the New York Wheel into an attraction similar in caliber to that of Universal Studios in Hollywood.

Tasked with leading the charge to transform Staten Island into New York City's next "big tourism destination," Joel Ward brings over 25 years of experience in the tourism and attraction industry.

In fact, he began his career with an 18-year tenure at Universal Studios, where he spearheaded the transformation of the Hollywood studio theme park from tourist attraction to what has been touted as a "world-class destination."

Ward said he hopes to replicate this transformation on Staten Island.

"When I look at Staten Island and the New York Wheel project, only one word comes to mind -- potential," said Ward.

"This is such an exciting time for Staten Island, which is rife with new development, new attractions and all the pieces to turn the North Shore into the next big destination," he added.

Projects Ward has worked on include: Twentieth Century Fox World Malaysia; a new tourist complex at the Great Wall of China in Badaling, China; Monkey King Theme Park in Beijing, China; Tianzishan Cultural Park in Hunan Province, China, and more.

Ward will take on new responsibilities in his role as the Wheel general manager for ProFun Management Group, which is the project's operations management company.

"We are thrilled to have a seasoned professional with a worldwide perspective on growing new destinations and attracting constituencies across the globe," said Rich Marin, president and CEO of the New York Wheel.

"Ward's breadth of experience will help to ensure Staten Island's North Shore is a global hot spot for years to come," he added.

NY WHEEL CONSTRUCTION

Scheduled to open in 2018, the Wheel will accommodate up to 1,440 people per ride, and feature a 38-minute ride in one of its 36 capsules. The Wheel's five-acre green roof will host large events, including concerts, food festivals, and corporate gatherings. The Wheel will also be equipped with LED lighting facing Manhattan.

Pieces of the New York Wheel have already started to arrive in New York Harbor, including its four, 500-ton legs which arrived at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal for processing in early October. The legs will be floated over to Staten Island and the Wheel's construction site later this year.

In addition, the four, 100-ton pedestals (base) of the New York Wheel arrived at the construction site via barge from Montreal, Canada, in late fall 2016 and were installed during a brief ceremony in mid-December.

"The installation of the four pedestals is fully complete," said Tiffany Townsend, a Wheel spokeswoman.

"The next steps will be the arrival of the spreader mats and crane to the site in the next two weeks. This is in preparation for the arrival and erection of the Wheel's legs," she added.

State directs another $20M to Staten Island outlet mall

Quote:
The Cuomo administration has authorized another $20 million grant to developers of an outlet mall on Staten Island, bringing the total amount of state subsidies on the project to $67 million.

The grant was approved Monday by the board of Empire State Development, the state’s economic development authority. It is the third round of subsidies the state has sent to Empire Outlets, which will bring stores, restaurants and a hotel to a site next to the St. George Ferry Terminal that are projected to employ 1,300 people.

Officials and the mall’s developers say the money is offsetting the cost of infrastructure that benefits the nearby Staten Island Railway and protects against storm surge. But the size of the subsidy package — roughly a fifth of the total project cost, which has risen from $304.4 million to $354.4 million — has drawn concern in some corners, particularly amid a bid-rigging and bribery scandal that has resulted in charges against some of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s closest aides.

“An outlet mall on prime waterfront property is a really questionable use of $67 million in subsidies,” said E.J. McMahon, president of the Empire Center, a fiscally conservative think tank. “We could build four upstate film hubs with that kind of money.”

Officials at Empire State Development said the new money was needed to make the site more resilient in case of a major storm, and note that Hurricane Sandy flooded the area with five feet of water, knocking out the Staten Island Railway's control center and a switching station.

“It’s very difficult to finance this in traditional methods, because it includes MTA property, it includes existing infrastructure and, of course, because of its proximity to the waterfront edge and the experience with Hurricane Sandy,” Joseph Tazewell, who oversees ESD projects in New York City, said during the board meeting. “It really needs to be locked tight with respect to water.”

[...]

“We are building new flood barriers, better roadways and Staten Island Railway improvements that will benefit all Staten Islanders and make commuting easier,” the statement reads. “And we are doing it faster and at a lower cost to taxpayers than if the state had done the work itself.”

the west side of the ferry terminal is now blocked off, so there is no easy way to walk over to the ny wheel site, but from the ferry i believe this is a shot of the four posts that will hold in the ferris wheel struts:

^ Nice to see those outlets coming along. I hadn't realized it was opening this year, though it would be next year with the wheel.

Staten Island actor Theo Rossi to be Empire Outlets new brand ambassador

By Diane C. Lore
March 27, 2016

Quote:
Actor and producer Theo Rossi, known for his roles on Netflix's "Marvel's Luke Cage" and FX's "Sons of Anarchy," announced his newest role Monday as brand ambassador for Empire Outlets, the city's first and only retail outlet center, under construction on Staten Island's North Shore waterfront.

Rossi, 41, a Staten Island native who grew up in Oakwood, said he will champion the economic revitalization of the North Shore, and spread the word about Empire Outlets' mix of world-class retail and food and beverage options.

Empire Outlets will include around 100 designer outlet retailers, a 190-room hotel with a rooftop venue and a 1,250-space parking garage, as well as number of restaurants on its 40,000-square-foot food and beverage deck, which offers views of the Manhattan skyline.

Empire Outlets is expected to open in late 2017.

.....Rossi chuckled when asked if he’d be out making sales pitches to fancy retailers.

“I don’t know exactly what the [marketing] plan is, but I’ll do whatever they need to get the word out,” said Rossi, who grew up in the Oakwood neighborhood and still has a place in the borough.

“I sat down with Joe and we said, ‘How can we get more people to come to Staten Island? It can’t just be about Wu Tang Clan. Empire Outlets is an incredible way to get people to come and stay , with the stores, the hotel, the views and the Wheel next door,” Rossi said.

“I’ll do whatever they need to get the word out,” said Rossi, who grew up in the Oakwood neighborhood and still has a borough home.

The outlets are scheduled to open in late 2017. But a source said, “BFC is also considering spring 2018 instead to coincide with the Wheel opening,” a separate project.

In that video, it would make sense to see the workers move the beams attached to a pallet on a forklift.
Just hoping to see something happen this year.

Twenty-five minutes to Midtown. Nice.

New fast ferry from St. George to Midtown; Oddo reveals deal

BY ANNA SANDERS

Quote:
A fast ferry would run from St. George to Midtown Manhattan under an agreement with NY Waterway brokered by Borough President James Oddo.

Several aspects of the new amenity haven't been determined yet, including the cost to ride and exactly when the service will launch, as only the framework of the agreement was announced Thursday night.

But the trip to the West 39th Street Ferry Terminal in Midtown would take 25 minutes, roughly the same time the Staten Island Ferry takes to arrive at Whitehall Terminal in downtown Manhattan, according to Borough Hall.

The ferry would run throughout the day from the new dock being built by the NY Wheel and BFC Partners at the St. George terminal. That dock is expected to be complete in about a year.

Those using the service will be able to use NY Waterway's free connecting bus service from the company's Midtown terminal to other nearby destinations, with seven routes between 57th and Canal Streets.
Quote:
North Shore developers cheered the new service agreement.

"This is big win for Staten Island and it means an even brighter future for the St. George community," Joseph Ferrara, principal of BFC Partners, and developer of the outlets, said in a statement.

Wheel CEO Rich Marin said, "Providing quick, affordable access to midtown is critical to the North Shore reaching its full potential as a neighborhood and a destination."
Quote:
Oddo said the new service doesn't "negate the city's obligations to our borough," under Mayor Bill de Blasio's so-called "citywide" ferry service.

That is expected to launch this spring, eventually reaching 21 stops in all boroughs, except Staten Island.

Service to Stapleton is part of a proposed phase of the system's roll out that hasn't been funded or scheduled yet.

Shake Shack to open in Empire Outlets

Quote:
Shake Shack -- a modern day "roadside" burger stand known for its use of 100 percent all-natural Angus beef -- will open a 3,865-square-foot restaurant in Empire Outlets, New York City's first outlet mall being built on the St. George waterfront.

The new restaurant will be located alongside 100 designer retailers and steps from the Staten Island Ferry and New York Wheel.

Shake Shack's restaurant at Empire Outlets will include a 947-square-foot outdoor dining area offering panoramic views of the lower Manhattan skyline. The restaurant is expected to open in March 2018, concurrently with the opening of Empire Outlets.
