Yeah, multistorey wood frame on top of heavy steel stilts... definitely an oddball, at least by local standards.

I never realized that in those old wood frame buildings, and I guess this new one, the floor is solid like that. Seems....inefficient.

2x6s are cheap, and easy to install.

It reduces the floor to floor height which can introduce efficiencies in exterior finishes, constructability, construction time, etc.

These architects must have an in somewhere with the City though. It must have been a struggle to get the City to agree to this type of floor system for a new build (it is common in a lot of the older warehouses).

Non-expert here... what's different about this floor system compared to most?

It's 2x6s nailed together side by side to provide a solid, 5.5" thick wood floor.

Normally the floor would be constructed with larger joists (steel or wood) placed further apart (i.e. 16" on-centre) or you could use pre-cast hollowcore concrete.

This system is unusual for modern construction. Especially given that is likely doesn't have an official, recognized assembly fire rating.

Builders have a bit of leeway with these types of floor systems in older buildings, like warehouses that are converted into residential - but for a new build, it would definitely be unique.

The top level apartments are indeed two storey units.

For me it's the people hanging out in the Best Western parking lot at 4 am.
