Moving those tracks isn't feasible. Aside from the political nightmare of the City, Province and CN (a public majority American-owned company today) all negotiating, the land acquisition is tough (part of Route 2 is MRDC after all, not the province) and it would involve a dozen or so overpasses. It's far easier for all parties to leave the tracks as-is and maybe have to accept the cost of gifting CN a brand-new overpass when something gets done to that traffic circle. Intercity rail probably isn't gone for good.

Agreed. Moving the tracks would be incredibly complicated. And the cost would be astronomical. Even raising the tracks above street level to create an elevated railway through the city would cost a fortune. I think we're stuck with the status quo.

I have never seen anything anywhere to suggest that DTI is planning on removing the overpass on Coverdale Road and replace it with an at grade intersection.

The T&T dealt with the issue of the fill being dumped next to the highway overpass in today's newspaper. Apparently it is just being stockpiled there until the approaches on the Riverview side of the new bridge over the Petitcodiac can be constructed later this year (after the causeway is closed).

The causeway will be closed from May 1st to November 1st. The channel underneath the new bridge will be dredged open by July 1st. This is when the river will be officially rerouted.

Fundraising to begin for the new Riverview Recreational Complex to be built off of Bridgedale Blvd next to the Mill Creek Nature Park.

Quote:
The Town of Riverview wishes to announce the start of a community-led fundraising campaign with an objective of $2 million in support of the Riverview Recreation Complex (RRC).

“We’re very excited to be at this point, where the community can see what the Riverview Recreation Complex is going to look like and participate in the fundraising campaign,” says campaign spokesperson Lawrence Forbes. “It’s going to take a lot of community support to put a complex like this together. We’re really looking to engage every citizen and give an opportunity for everyone to be involved in the fundraising program.”

After eight years of planning, the RRC will be a 6,678 square-metre (71,000-square-foot), modern facility offering a combination of active recreation zones and gathering spaces for public meetings, special events, as well as cultural and community activities. The complex will include an eight-lane, 25-metre pool, a separate leisure pool, a 200-metre padded walking track, a turf fieldhouse, multi-purpose rooms, connections to the Mill Creek Nature Park, and more.

In addition to the $2 million goal the community campaign, the Town of Riverview is seeking funding from all levels of government under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for the $32.6 million project. The funding request would involve $13 million from the Government of Canada and $10.6 million from the Province of New Brunswick while the Town of Riverview would contribute $7 million via the program.

“The Riverview Recreation Complex will provide a sustainable approach to growth that strikes a balance between providing high-quality municipal services, an inclusive solution engaging all residents, and meeting the long-term needs of the community,” said Forbes.

The RRC will be situated at the end of Runneymeade Road, on the newly-built Bridgedale Boulevard, and is expected to open its doors to residents in late 2023.

It looks like an amazing facility but in the current situation is it wise to be planning this kind of project?
So many folks are struggling financially, businesses going under. We do have vaccines but we still don't know long term how it's going to go.

Indeed. The feds are desperate to find public infrastructure projects to shovel money towards as part of a post-pandemic stimulus package. A new recreational centre in Riverview would fit the bill very well.

The only thing standing in the way of this project will likely be Blaine "Parsimonious" Higgs..............

On the other side of things though the GMA continues to grow and attract people from other parts of the country despite the dire financial situation from the pandemic. This type of infrastructure can stimulate that growth, create other business & housing opportunities in the area as well as add a quality of life aspect to the town. It provides the community additional facilities towards their health. The YMCA in the north end seems to be doing this nicely for folks in that area.

Its not as though the government hasn't also provided billions of dollars towards local businesses in wage subsidies and rent relief. They are trying to do both. I guess it remains to be seen whether spending wildly through the pandemic to keep things going will end up being the correct approach. The alternative of doing nothing seems pretty grave, or perhaps you are suggesting additional funding for businesses on top of what they've provided rather than funding something like this?

They've got windows and doors on the 14 unit apartment building under construction on Pine Glen Road. They're moving fast, I imagine it will be ready to lease in the summer. Smaller build but a nice little in-filling project.

While driving by the site yesterday, I noticed that they've finally started the first floor framing on the Kensington Apartments. All 78 units have been pre leased.

Mini tower crane is about to go up on Coverdale Road. Will we also see Cordova start something this spring/summer and have 2 cranes working on Coverdale?

The property across from the Riverview mall where they're building the 32 unit apartment building. I drove by earlier and the crane was there, but not set up yet.

OK people, the solution to this years traffic chaos is here - make sure your bicycle tires are inflated and your gears are lubed.

Wow! This will be a big boost to this project! Now, we just need a matching donation from Robert Irving.

It's been on the town's wish list for years, so this donation should really help propel things forward. There's been a lot of development happening it that part of Riverview for he last several years, and this recreation complex will be a nice addition.
