Cootes is like max. 4 feet deep and sheletered so that makes sense. Though still need that cold period. I have fished it a couple of times by boat. Also fished Desjardins Canal for carp. Lake Jojo was my next target but haven't gotten around to it.

There are so many skating trails now. I wonder how many there were 5 years ago compared to now. It makes you wonder why they didn't make more in the past. Like why they didn't have those big city signs like every city has now at their city hall.

How many refrigerated rinks does your city have? Ottawa has four. Along with the City Hall and Lansdowne rinks included on my first post, we also have the Jim Tubman Chevrolet Rink in Elmvale Acres (mid-century suburban south end of old Ottawa) and the Ben Franklin Place rink in Nepean (named for a former mayor of Nepean, not the American Ben Franklin).

Jim Tubman, which is (was?) another Sens rink like the one at City Hall. Opened in 2017.

The Sens rink is gorgeous... love the lighting.

I'm not sure that there are any refrigerated outdoor hockey rinks in Winnipeg. There is the leisure rink (circular shape) at The Forks, but beyond that I'm not sure. Maybe TNSE's Camp Manitou (just outside the city) has one, but I'm not aware of any others. It seems like the kind of thing that would be great to have here.

Just remembered about when the Leafs went to NPS two years in a row I believe. I went the first year and waited 45 minutes past the scheduled start time and they hadn't arrived yet so that was a waste. Had to get back to work.

Was cool that they took the subway to get there.

I imagine cold weather is a little more consistent in Winnipeg? It's all over the place here in Ottawa nowadays, which sparked the need for these refrigerated rinks.

Pretty cool having the Leafs at NPS in TO. Awesome that they took the subway. Hopefully, that tradition can startup again next year.

Normally yes, but this winter has been really mild which means outdoor ice has been crap for long stretches of time.

The outdoor ice at community centres is typically good enough for shinny, practices and little kids (like U10) but with a refrigerated rink just about any level of team could use it.

That's too bad. Hopefully, refrigerated rinks can make an appearance in Winnipeg in the near future then.

The Rideau Canal opened to skaters this morning. This is very late.

Guelph has many informal skating rinks throughout its park system. Contrast to KW where there's hardly any. I drove hundreds of streets downtown today looking at the housing stock. Cool city.

I live in Ottawa and never knew about that Jim Tubman Sens rink. That looks great. We should have more of those in the city.

Now that the Sens foundation and the Sens have broken-up, I'm not sure if we'll see anymore of these unfortunately, unless the City picks up where they left off.

Winnipeg’s Red River Skating Trial is 5km long. Despite a relatively warm winter, it still opened and operated. Since it’s technically not a rink, it doesn’t really count as one, but I think it’s still worth mentioning.

When it was 10km long, it was the longest skating trail in the world.

Went for a skate on the Ramsey Lake Skate Path today. It's about 1.5 km long. A nice interlude to winter on a nice, mild day.

Rideau Canal was closed last night. Messaging was vague as to whether it will reopen or not.

If this is it it will have been a short season.

Same thing around here, many rinks were reportedly closed yesterday as ice was melting fast everywhere. River trails are reportedly in poor shape but they're apparently still open for the moment.

I would love it if it cooled down a bit to keep the rinks going longer... they didn't really start opening up until around Christmas, and they have been a major source of entertainment for a lot of youngsters, especially since indoor arenas have been closed since the start of November. Two months of outdoor skating is really not enough..

I think the Rideau Canal only opened on Jan. 25-26.
