Here’s hoping that gene designs something decent.

I can't access the article. Is Kaufman the architect? I'd gladly take a simple glass box over this garbage, though something insane looking would be disappointing.

Sadly yes he is. I've never wanted a simple glass box more than now. Although there was one design that he did ( in Meatpacking or Chelsea i think) that was surprisingly good for his standards.

Yes. At 14th and 8th. His new hotel on 5th at about 30th St is decent too.

From the article…

Quote:
Atlas Hospitality is diving into the pool of uncertainty that is New York City’s hotel industry, planning a 401-key establishment in the heart of Midtown.

The hospitality firm filed plans with the Department of Buildings for a hotel at 711 Seventh Avenue. The approximately 140,000-square-foot hotel will be 32 stories and 343 feet tall, Crain’s reported.

Prolific hotel architect Gene Kaufman is the designer of the building, which has no brand yet. The goal for Atlas is to break ground on the project by early next year and to complete construction in early 2025.

Crains posted this, which suggests that there would be an entrance on 7th, but the tower would rise on the DD and Moishe’s Luggage sites on 168 snd 170 W 48th.
In fact, I quickly looked at the DD and Moishe’s Luggage sites on ACRIS, and they seem to be owned by the same entity that owns 711 7th. (I looked at ACRIS late at night and after several glasses of wine, so my perception may have been flawed.)

Anyway, I can't tell if the Edition Hotel on the corner of 47th is what's shown in the right, and the tower portion of the new hotel sits entirely on 48th or if this whole thing is the new hotel. If so, it would be an L-shape with part on 7th and part on 48th.

The site of the new hotel seen in relation to the new Hardrock.

The demo permits for this PoS were filed last week.

Demo permits for the junky DD and “luggage” shop (166 W 48th St) were also filed last week.

Small Times Square Building To Be Torn Down For Hotel, Plans Show
The 96-year-old building once housed a dance hall that was shut down for hosting "obscene" events in the 1960s. A 32-story hotel is planned.

Title changed to: NEW YORK | 711 Seventh Ave | 375 FT | 32 FLOORS

Looks like a 55 ft jump relative to older height. I was wondering when this structure would be developed. Was always trashy to begin with.

As with TS, maybe a big improvement on the signage, more modern (The Times Square ordinance that requires signs and lights/screens).

Why are the small projects rarely updated? Even though it is officially under construction?

the forum is fully volunteer based. nothing gets updated unless someone chooses to take interest in a project and visit the site regularly to post updates. There arent that many people on here, so most projects in most cities fly under the radar
