Everything new in LA has to be designed by either Gehry, Gensler, RTKL, or TCA.

If his involvement is limited mostly to walkways and bridges, then that's fine. The whole point of this project though is to restore the river as a natural habitat. In other words, it should be kept as simple as possible both for aesthetic reasons and to keep the costs down.

Entitlements and design will take a year or more.... Even then, buyouts arent that uncommon. It could start in 18 - 24 months if the owners really wanted to

LA Times: Historic Wilshire Royale apartments to be renovated by new owner

The gap between Downtown and Koreatown keeps getting smaller with the renovation of the Wilshire Royale: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...808-story.html

I know! For once, just once, could LA not try to overdo their public outdoor spaces? I like Gehry's buildings a lot, but he is not the right guy for this. No Gehry, no Gensler - get some kind of more naturalist designer.

The river should look like something Huck Finn would paddle down with huge adjoining marshes, parks (Piggyback Yards would be incredible), and a commercial stretch along DTLA. That's it.

At no point does it need curvy sheet metal.

Quality wood should be the primary material in the river restoration. Stainless steel would distract from the nature and remind you of where you actually are. However brightly colored stucco and concrete like in Pershing square would be worse around the river

LA has the commercially most successful and active crappy architects in America bar none. There is so much money but so little relative improvement in aesthetics. We'll never be as cool as Seattle or SF. The quality and sophistication of their projects across the board is so far ahead of us, even though we're getting similar money.

Gehry is the greatest living architect and there is probably nothing he can not do....but for that project I would see snohetta...

Wow. This should be the dominant design aesthetic throughout LA. Looks terrific.

This is awesome news. Westlake has so much potential! It's vibrant now, it just needs to be literally cleaned up (money put into cleaning facades, trash pickup, fixing infrastructure).

Agreed. Westlake cleanup/densification should be the biggest no brainer in LA. If the city has a housing shortage, this is where efforts should be concentrated. Same goes for all of Wilshire as the subway expands but like you said, Westlake has boundless potential with the existing architecture, park space, heavy transit, density, and location between Downtown and Ktown. There's no reason it should continue to look this shabby and sketchy in 20 years.
