Yeah, definitely a bad look for the project as a whole. Hopefully it brings about a quicker death.

I could even understand the logic and desire for the South Suburban Airport by area politicians.

But why all this subterfuge on behalf of a Wisconsin developer with air rights from Gerald Fogelson with unknown financing?
Anything "unknown" raises a red flag

Wow, what in the hell? Yeah, after that stunt, I am 100% behind the indefinite shelving of this project in its current form. Neither the city nor state have the resources for this nonsense. If a developer wants to build over the IC tracks, they can go right ahead. With their own damn money. Period.

Wow, shadiness and corruption in Illinois of all places, I'm shocked!

But in all seriousness, as cool as this would have been this always has had the air of a troll project. I don't really care because think of all of the potential upcoming projects downtown like Tribune, Parcel I, 78 site, 400LSD, Lincoln Yards etc. just to name a few.

Chicago is gonna look beyond epic if all of those get built.

Guys,

I don't know why you are all so up in arms about this project? I mean.... Look at it? It's the future of the city!

We got this thing, and it's f$cking golden!

Am I the only one who noticed they got Bill Kurtis to narrate the video?

What a shady way to force the state financing. Definitely looks very bad.

Does anyone know the latest thoughts from CTA/RTA/Metra on making this area an additional transit hub. It could make sense in my mind only if it resulted in a fast circulator route to get from museum campus to Union to Navy Pier.

Metra is on board, tentatively - they stand to get their coach yard and 18th St station rebuilt. No changes to their existing services, just shiny new facilities at no cost to them.

CTA seems a lot more skeptical. The circulator would likely go from here to Navy Pier only, using the McCormick Busway and lower-level streets in Lakeshore East. No Union Station connection. The L spur is even more dicey and vague.

Somehow this project manages to embarrasses itself every month. You'd think they learned not to make themselves a bigger target

^ It's honestly better and cheaper to ditch the 'L' branch, use to ROW for MED to Union Station, and have the CTA build a 16th St transfer Station.

Saw this blip in a Tribune article about the casinos.

Quote:
But for One Central to achieve liftoff, there’s the little matter of the $6.5 billion in state financing over 20 years that Landmark Development says it would need to make the project work.

The budget approved during Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s first year in office in 2019 gave the state authority to enter into negotiations with the developer, but there has been little public action since.

Early this year, Pritzker spokeswoman Emily Bittner said the administration was focused on recovering from the pandemic and that it would be “a challenge for any state to provide the significant amount this developer is seeking.”
Doesn't sound like they are inclined to provide the $6.5b.

Good. The state does not have money to finance private development. If your project isn't going to earn you a return, then time to find a better project.

To be honest, the fact that this project is getting any media coverage is a joke. This thing ain't happening.

Not that anybody believed them, but it's funny that at one point they said they could do the project without the state funding... Good luck.

It seems like the general feeling from everyone involved in the project is "I like it, but I'm not going to be the one who pays for it". The developers, the community stakeholders quoted in the video, the state and city government, Metra. All of them seem neutral to happy to see this thing through, as long as it's on someone else's dime.

Of course they could do the project without the state funding. It just requires changing the scope to not include an unnecessary transit center. Anchor the project with the casino instead of the transit center and offer no state subsidy. They can then package this with a deal for the Bears to remain in the city and the doming/renovation of Soldier Field.

All the stars can be aligned here if Lightfoot, Bears ownership, Bob Dunn, and Hard Rock work together.

And that's where the problem lies: the big "if". Just getting all those parties to work together (especially the Bears and Lightfoot/City) would be a miracle in my opinion. The relationship between Lightfoot and the Bears is especially sour.

It sounds good in theory, but IMO the Bears are set on making the Arlington Heights gig work, and if you can't get them on board the plan falls apart.

This will fall apart if tax money isn't involved. This project will never happen!
