Fry's Electronics just announced they are permanently closing all stores, including the one in North Austin at Mopac and Parmer. This was my go-to store for the past 20 years.

"After nearly 36 years in business as the one-stop-shop and online resource for high-tech professionals across nine states and 31 stores, Fry’s Electronics, Inc. (“Fry’s” or “Company”), has made the difficult decision to shut down its operations and close its business permanently as a result of changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic," reads a statement from Fry's.
This is the Austin location...

Man, I am definitely a man of the past. I love Fry's and actually have continued to shop there even during the pandemic. I have many great memories with them over the last 20 years. RIP. Very few liminal spaces left out there.

I support your use of the term "liminal" to describe a big box store. +1.

The west coast Fry's each had it's own quirky theme. So kitschy, yet fun.

It was downright depressing to go to the one here off Parmer the handful of times I went the last 18 months or so. Just a hollowed out cavernous wasteland.

It was sad - nostalgia took over every time I visited. Just after the holidays they closed off the northern (left) half of the store with curtains (where the Appliances, TVs, etc. were located). What little they had left was consolidated in the open end. Kind of funny - they had entire aisles dedicated to masks, sanitizers, gloves and other PPE. That area was fully stocked.

I don't if they're expanding, but I would love to see Micro Center open a store here in Austin (they have 2 Texas locations in Houston and Dallas) https://www.microcenter.com/site/stores/default.aspx

Ugh, I know. I would buy all my PPE there instead of amazon just to help with a flow of cash lol.

Microcenter had me with the font! Jesus that's great haha, I fear we won't see anything like that in Austin though. This city seems to be growing into a virtual-cashless-curbside-agoraphobics kind of playground...even post pandemic. I very much hope I am WRONG, as I often am.

Article from PCMag about C-band for mobile devices. PEA is “partial economic areas” defined by the FCC where Austin listed as #35.

I contacted micro center on Instagram and they told me they have had a ton of requests for an Austin store and it’s for sure on the expansion radar for them. Fingers crossed!

Just for you skyscraper fans, I found this awesome deal on Amazon for this amazing Yeti cooler:

If I'm spending $799.99 on a cooler, it better come with a lot of dry ice and a kidney or two.

Looks like Alamo Drafthouse won't reopen the Ritz on 6th. No notes yet on whether they've sold it or what will come next in that space.

We were driving past a road construction site a few months ago and I saw a cooler sitting outside their truck and trailer, and it had 'YETI' painted on it.

Grass fire today at 8th & I-35. Almost burned the Tyndall condos. I saw two fire trucks there this afternoon and thought it was an accident, but then saw all the grass burned. They said someone was weed whacking nearby.

Not sure where else to put this, but are the pop ups/pop up blockers on this site out of control (I use Chrome). I'm getting ~2300 per page load, which slows down the loading every time. Most sites are closer to 10-30 blocks but here it's consistently over 2000 per page load. Or is it just me?

Very frustrating and wondering if mods or the site have any plans/thoughts for it. Thanks.

Yeah, the issue has come up with others. Dylan is looking into it, but it mostly seems to be on the ad company's end.
