^ All true, but Smurfit-Stone is the "Adventures in Babysitting" building, who can forget that?

Any building that is featured in movies or a TV show also gets more attention from the general public

Yea, I think Smurfit-Stone is incredibly distinctive and known to the average joe. If you did a man-on-street poll of 10 people and asked them to think of three chicago skyscrapers, I bet "the adventures in babysitting building/vagina building/triangle building" would be included by at least five respondents.

Agree with the overall point about River Point though.

My kids watch Disney channel and their show Raven's Home has them living in Thalia Hall. I must have told them 100 times now how much i love that building...they say WE KNOW DAD as soon as i open my mouth when it comes on.

Wasn't River Point featured in the Rampage movie?

Never seen Adventures in Babysitting! Probably a generational thing, I was born a little too late. I'm not sure it had the same kind of staying power as John Hughes' movies - never seen it aired on cable, for example. I'll have to queue it up one of these days.

You're giving people too much credit. They would probably name the two buildings with observation decks (Sears, JHC) and then maybe Trump or Wrigley/Tribune. Marina City also a strong possibility. Smurfit Stone is known as an unusual part of the skyline (I remember it appearing on cheap Walgreens quality tourist t-shirts, as part of a skyline graphic) but I doubt people could name it. Doesn't help that it's had like 5 names in its history (Stone Container, Smurfit-Stone, Crain's Communications, now just 150 N Michigan).

Even more confusing, it was never actually named Stone Container or Smurfit-Stone. They just had an anchor tenant sign at sidewalk level.

Sterling Bay pocketing a good payday as a sale of their McDonald’s HQ building has just been announced:

They will remain well capitalized for their other upcoming ventures, including Lincoln Yards

35-story tower proposed for Near North Side would feature 75 luxury condos

"Ald. Brian Hopkins, whose 2nd Ward includes the site, expressed qualified support for the project. He said the developer reduced the height and number of units after criticism at neighborhood forums.

“All of the changes that I have requested have been made,” Hopkins said. Pending a technical review of design details by city agencies, he said, “They are on the path to approval.”

How is that a turd? It’s a nice classic design. Very Chicago.

What, exactly, is 'Chicago' about this? The only 'Chicago' aspect of this is referencing other pathetic Lucien designs...

Generally not a fan of Lagrange, but this is ok. There's a lot of people decrying the relentless onslaught of blue boxes. This is not one of those. And the massing and details look decent. It certainly fits the neighborhood. I don't have the energy to whine about this if the end product looks something like this.

Why is there always a proclivity to reduce the heights of Chicago proposals. Its like these alderman reduce heights as a sense of pride and accomplishment. When did this become almost the norm...

couldn't of said it better myself!...I would love to hear an alderman's reasoning on why the constant almost default reaction to asking for height reduction accomplishes?...How does the height of a building affect people at the ground level in anyway?
