I was walking down 42nd Street sunday night, taking in the view of Vanderbilt, and really appreciating the way it tapers to give a view of the Chrysler Building. Much is said about the cutaway to reveal Grand Central, but the view of Chrysler is nice also.

Here's an idea of what I'm talking about...

Some of those shots make it appear as if 1VB doesn't have a "core" to speak of.

This is gonna be a great view when the tower is lit up at night, similar to the view of BofA over the rink...

Looking again, it seems as if you might be right. Is it possible they're constructing the core up through the outer structure? Traditionally the concrete core shoots up first and you just bolt the surrounding steels onto it. But if you pour the cement around the center elements of the steel skeleton then the concrete core and outer structure become more of a single construct, which increases strength of the building significantly. I feel like they did that at 1WTC as well. Of course, I have no idea what I'm talking about so here's your grain of salt

It has a core, but the entire structure is steel

Skyscrapercenter has the core listed as reinforced concrete. Maybe they're wrong?

The core could certainly be following the steel as was done at one wtc.

Construction of this building looks really familiar to what that one wtc looked like- and the two are quite similar in mass/footprint/and height, more then I originally took note.

^ It will dominate in that view, like the other up and coming giants.

Still unsure about the horizontal lines and the international style of Vandy. Hoping it'll impress closer to completion (maybe with the crown). For now, it's seemingly unspectacular, apart from the height.
