Will there only be two runways? And what about enough gates?

I really liked Tegel when I flew into there. But I'm sure this airport will be gorgeous.

My understanding is that they are lengthening the existing south runway at Schoenfeld and then building a new runway south of the new terminal. That will give the field a total of three operating runways.

I thought Tegel was terrible. Especially for a city so important and as massive as Berlin was....

Plus there was no rail connection, which seemed odd for such a great rail system (U-bahn and S-Bahn).

Regardless though, I'm excited about the new airport and can't wait to go back to Berlin

The airport will be located south of Berlin, 18km distance to the city center (Brandenburg Gate/ TV Tower)

The airport will be connected by S-Bahn (green)(overground rail metro), by an express airport rail shuttle (red) with 20 min ride to the Central Station, by regional rail and HSR in North/South East/West directions. The rail station will operate directly under the main airport terminal (center of the pink area). Of course it is also connected by Autobahn(orange).

It will use 2 runways, with a starting capacity of ~27 mil. passengers. Future (potential) satellite terminals (horizontal blue buildings) can expand the capacity to ~50 mil. passengers. An additional 3. runway (not yet envisioned or planned) could be built in the South (right part of the image)....

The new airport will become the inner European Hub of Air Berlin.

A little outdated in quality and design, but still an interesting promotion video
of the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

7L/25R was shut a couple of years ago. Schoenefeld has been a single-runway airport since.

Looks ok. Not a fan of the interior architecture.

Berlin airport to open seven months later

The delay announcement came following weeks of reports that the project committee was working on an extension plan following a number of problems, including the financial collapse of a company working on the project and the introduction of new European Union safety standards.

New opening date 03 June 2012

Dual runways are invariably enough for large airports and they get a higher amount of larger capacity aircraft as opposed to American airports that that huge frequencies of low capacity aircraft (therefore requiring more runways).

Thanks for the updates.

With Air Berlin joining Oneworld next year I hope to see a lot of new destinations. Berlin seems to have fallen behind the other German cities when it comes to air travel, perhaps this will start to change that.

This looks cool. Not so much the terminal itself, but the gates the airplanes pull up to.

I'm most impressed with the design, I particularly love the glass as you walk through the gate:

The glass frontside is really exquisite, also the interior design will be quite pleasant. What I hate is the future control tower ...

For all those who want to know more,
here is the newly renovated Wikipedia entry:
