At what point does a spire become required, if ever?

Spires tend to look better on buildings that taper to form a pinnacle...like the Chrysler building, met life..etc... having random spires on flat top buildings is ehh...it grows on you after awhile but i mean from an architectural standpoint doesn't seem to add much to the building except vanity height.

Instead of a spire they should have built this tower infinitely tall to the vanishing point like Brancusi's Endless Column.

Now that would be cool! Plus then Chicago would reign forever as the home of the WTB since we would have an infinitely tall building.

Any other silly hypotheticals that would never happen that we should discuss while we are at it?

While I agree with the issue of the mechanical floor aesthetics, I've got to say I think his overall write-up is on the money here. I've been critical of him at times, but he's had at least two very recent reviews (this and 110 N Wacker) with which I find it difficult to quibble too much. I think they're pretty good takes.

Such great news on the new hotel flag and restaurant. I'm not sure what the loan situation is, but I've got to think one of the near-term benefits/goals of this huge announcement is just to have a stable situation in terms of the condo sales (we've seen the reports of large unit buyer lawsuits to back out, etc). Then, be well-positioned to pick momentum back up on that front once we're on the other side of the pandemic and the economy has firmer footing with much less uncertainty. Hats off to Magellan here.

CTBUH would not consider this a building, but a tower, because the "TALL BUILDING CHARACTERISTICS" page on this site says "To be considered a building, at least 50 percent of its height must be occupiable".

Omitting the southern mechanical vents was some sort of combo of odd/lazy reporting.

I appreciate his work and like his reviews overall, but he seems to write for the mild-moderately interested fan of architecture from the general public, which may appeal to the Trib's general readership but leaves much to be desired from those more in-the-know (and likely his frequent readers). I wish he dove in a little deeper to help educate/engage more readers and dared to have some "hotter takes" for us to chew on.

So in order for an infinitely-tall building to be approved by CTBUH, a population of ≥infinity/2 would be required (i.e. ≥the total number of even integers).

You would then have to convince this population to occupy the building, so hopefully its in a good neighborhood.. you might want to invest in some local parks. If you can convince some artisanal bakeries and high-end coffee shops to move nearby, they will help to attract the young liberal-arts grads, who are basically the foundation of society (they themselves said so).

Blair typically tosses in the word "banal" to add some heat. But I agree that some spicier takes would be nice.

Anyone think they'll try to hang at St. Regis sign on the outside?

Best-case scenario for a rebranding! St. Regis is a world-class brand, equally suited for Chicago, a world-class city. This represents not only a bet on the Chicago brand, but a bet on the vitality of the local hospitality assets in a post-covid world, and the broader vitality of the region as we move forward

Oh shit, I just thought of something: they should just put the St. Regis signage on the surface/face of the blow-through floor! Two sides can have the logo, and the other two opposite sides can have the name.
