Philadelphia International Airport wants to be its own city department

Anyone would like to explain the pros and cons of this?
I'm having a hard time understand why there is a need for this

June CDR Lowrises
  • 2507 Almond: Nice lowrise project in Fishtown. Will add much-needed density to this strech.
  • 4701 Wayne: Good-looking lowrise replacing an empty lot in Germantown.
  • 2258 E Tioga: yayyyyy more self-storage...
  • 619 North Broad: 6 story lowrise project at Broad and Mount Vernon that is replacing a midrise concept from a few years ago. I think that they have a few kinks to work out in the design, but overall I like this direction better than the original.
  • 2001-05 Richmond: Part of the Northbank project. We already knew about this one.
  • 1236-46 Belmont: Back for its second review. Not really any large changes I can see. Build it!
  • 1631 S 52nd: Self-storage back for its second review. Awful.

Yeah. Not really liking the pops of yellow for 619 N Broad. Maybe for Miami or the Southwest. I still think the yellow panels at The Hamilton makes it look like a high end storage center…

That, and the arrangement of the windows (they're not centered over the arches). If they fix those two things after the first review I'd be more than satisfied. I'm a sucker for breeze blocks.

619 N. Broad St.

It's hard to tell what the materials are up top and it could be cheap looking but anything is better than what is there. It's a trash filled abandoned building with homeless people living in the playground equipment. There's so many empty lots to fill in.

If you look at the CDR Proposal, it's white brick all the way up. It just changes which type of white brick halfway up the second story. So materials here will be good.

There are some aspects of the design I really like and some that seem like the architect’s kid got on their computer and started messing around with it.

I LOVE 619 N. Broad. I think with some tweaking, this will be a fantastic project.

I also LOVE that with this development, there will officially be only THREE developable parcels along North Broad Street between Spring Garden Street and Fairmount Ave. That's incredible. Who thought we'd be saying that?

-More self storage... oh well. Apparently there is a lot of demand for it in this country for whatever reason, and they could easily be torn down or converted to loft apartments or condos in the future. Plus, where that one is proposed in Port Richmond is fine. It's not in the central, urban, built up core of Port Richmond at least.

LOVE the Germantown one, and love how Germantown is on fire. Germantown has the potential to be one of the hottest, most desirable neighborhoods in the city, and a huge tourist area.

Love the project in Olde Richmond/Fishtown. I would certainly consider this area Olde Richmond. Fishtown neighborhood definitely ends at York Street. Semantics aside though.... I've long thought that this stretch of Aramingo Ave could be much more urban. All of those horrible suburban stores can be torn down and replaced with walkable, urban, mixed-use buildings.

Density is good, but nothing like ground floor parking to kill a street. Materials mix/design looks incoherent to me.

Agree regarding The Hamilton (that building has a host of problems), but I like the yellow on the arches here. I do think continuing the yellow through the breeze blocks may be a bit much, but we'll see.

Window alignment is a little strange. Overall I like the design.

Yeah, I think this is a great design for the location. Love the green metal. Maybe would have continued the brick to the top, but mostly just hope the brick isn't precast.

For REALZ. And throw in Mount Airy, Chestnut Hill, and East Falls, and you have a continuous block of neighborhoods that's hard to beat in any city in the US. Not to mention the adjacent Wissahickon/Fairmount Park, and what the hell, might as well throw in Roxborough, Manayunk, and Andorra. The Great Northwest.
