It will last at LEAST 2 years but probably 3.

The NDP has a very precarious financial situation and they simply don't have the money to run another election within 2 years and they are the only ones that could bring down the government. Also, if the other parties bring down the Liberal government within the next 2 years they will pay dearly for it blaming them for {as opposed to the Liberals now} forcing the country into yet another unnecessary election.

In 3 + years when we finally go back to the polls, it most certainly won't be Trudeau leading the Liberals. Parties know that all leaders {even ones who are still well liked} have a best-before date and it's usually 8 years max.

The push to replace Trudeau will also not come exclusively from the party brass but also from regular MPs & Cabinet Ministers who want their kick at the can.

Moncton, RE: Cons winning the popular vote but not the most seats, I too find that sort of thing concerning but would point out Cons still represent a minority of voters. The overwhelming majority voted to their left.

^^ That's one of the best observations you can make about this election or many other elections, vote splitting is not always indicative of deep ideological divisions between various party voters. There are many, like me, who waver between the left and centre left.

The best surprise of the night seems to be the slight shift upwards of support towards the NDP... And also glad to see my vote ACTUALLY mattered for once and yes it did go to Team NDP and Mr. Desjarlais. Kinda also cool to see that both my provincial and federal rep's are now fellow NDP members AND millennials to boot. I was born in 1983 and they're both younger than me, which now makes me feel O.A.F. But kudos nonetheless...

Also, Yay for the Liberals in Edmonton Centre if that's your thing... I guess... And Mr. Chahal in Calgary Skyview who will probably be a cabinet minister by next week as the only Liberal in Alberta besides downtown Edmonton...

Very very happy with these results. I hope PM Trudeau gets back to work promptly to build back better with NDP support.

Yes! FFS! Get the Langley Skytrain back on that 2025 timeline... Or at the very least fund Skytrain to the North Shore and UBC as well as build the Langley Line when you can... This is the time to get some legacy infrastructure built!

The results in St. John’s are pretty well done (three polls left to report, so nothing really). The Cons remain in third and the PPC vote was too low to have made a difference for them.

St. John’s East:

St. John’s South-Mount Pearl:

The rest were comfortably Liberal except for three interesting ridings. As Cochrane said on CBC last night, these are ridings where a lot of people commute to Alberta for work and they bring home a lot of the same concerns and voting preferences.

The Cons are winning the only one that didn’t have a PPC candidate.

Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame

And then two ridings where the PPC may have played a bit of a spoiler:

Long Range Mountains:

Bonavista-Burin-Trinity:

Of course, in both a majority still voted for centre-left parties.

I'm pretty happy with the results in Waterloo-Wellington. Mike Morrice ended up winning Kitchener Centre for the Greens, once again showing how farcical Mainstreet's riding level polling is. Liberals easily retook Waterloo and Guelph, and Michael Chong retook Wellington-Halton Hills (CPC desperately needs more candidates like him). Kitchener South-Hespeler and Cambridge were close wins for the Liberals, but the PPC did a great job on syphoning off the loony votes and handling the win to the Liberals. It looks like that is also the case in Kitchener Conestoga, but the race there is still too close to call.

A pundit on CTV this morning referred to the election as a "$600M referendum on JTs awesomeness"

He then said that other people don't think JT is as awesome as JT does........

So, with thousands of mail in ballots left to count, how do people think this might affect the overall seat count?

Personally, I don't think by much, but the mail-ins likely would benefit the Liberals more than the CPC, and the possibility exists that a seat or two might flip.

"$600M was wasted." - Every partisan commentator whose party didn't get a desired outcome last night.

I'm glad we had what is essentially a post Covid election where policies other than Covid were actually discussed. But also, there's now a clear mandate for Vaccine passports and mandates. We can get out of this damn pandemic.

Politically. Trudeau now know he's at reached the limit of his brand. If he doesn't I'm sure Freeland will tell him. O'Toole has showed that he can gain votes despite moving to centre and having the PPC attacking his right flank. The PPC has been shown to be impotent. They couldn't win a single seat even with Trudeau promising federal vaccine passports. The NDP and Bloc are both range bound despite a fairly friendly electorate this year. I'd say this election is almost worthwhile for what it sets up for the next election.

I can’t see if affecting the seat count much - it’s possible a few ridings like mine flip over to NDP. As you say though, the mail-ins are probably likely to benefit the Libs so this may result in a vote share disparity that isn’t so glaring.

My guess is that any seat where the margin is currently 500 or less could potentially flip.

I won't say wasted (elections are democracy in action), but not exactly well-spent either given that Parliament was functioning decently and the Liberals' brief high was a mirage.

I mostly see the hazard of governing post-COVID being the issue. The feds aren't going to do much with any vaccine passports outside their mandate because they'll let the provinces die on that particular hill. They'll be coping with those big government deficits, so reality may arrive faster than they hope given their big spending promises. The hangover cometh soon.

As for pandemic, well, it's going to burn itself out this winter. How it does this? We shall see. I wouldn't want to be in the hot seat for the next couple of years. Let somebody else shovel that stuff.
