For Travis County (Austin) - it should be noted that this creek saw heavy flooding in May and then again in October of last year.

Badly decomposed body found in south Austin - 1/3

And another one for Travis County. This one and the one above are located within the county where Austin is, but they're outside of the city limits. This one looks like a hit and run, but they were still investigating.

Pedestrian killed in Eastern Travis County hit-and-run - 1/5

And another suspected hit and run, this one in Northwest Austin.

Woman struck, killed in northwest Austin identified - 1/8

Philly did end the year with an increase, but I read it was the first time Philly went three consecutive years of Murders being under 300 in 50+ years. I guess that's a good thing, but with a new Mayor and new Police Commissioner, Lets hope that number goes back down.

The bad thing from the article I read was that 48% have gone unsolved.

Wow, that's really bad. In Vienna (pop. 1.8M) alls murders have been solved since 2009. Does the Philly PD need more personnel? Or is the sheer number of homicides the problem?

Lol I just remembered that Ottawa (Which is still in Canada).
Is better than both Calgary & Austin (& the Municipality of Ottawa is bigger
than Austin too with a Simular Black Population within the city limits as well).
The City of Ottawa has since estimated it had a population of 951,727 in 2014
(Likely closer to 1 Million by now).

Austin's Black Population is shrinking between 1990-2010 from 12.4% Porportion to only 8.1%
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin...s#Demographics

Ottawa's on the other Hand is growing instead from: 4.9% (In 2006) to 5.7% (In 2011).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Ottawa

By now it is likely almost the same.

So Austin's Black Community is shrinking 0.2% Proportion Per Year,
& Ottawa's is growing. 0.2% Per Year.

7 Murder's for Ottawa this year, Half that of the Canadian Average & way lower than any American City that size.

2015 homicides

1. Yusuf Ibrahim, 27, was shot inside a home on Forestglade Crescent at about 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6. A source told CBC News he was shot multiple times in the back and was found on a couch. Months later, police offered a $50,000 reward for information. More than four months after the shooting, on June 19, 23-year-old Abdullahi Osman and Mohamed Abdi Abdullahi, 32, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. They are scheduled to appear in court in January 2016.

2. Connor Stevenson, 18, was stabbed to death in the stairwell of an apartment building at 2020 Jasmine Cres. on the evening of Tuesday, April 14. Police initially said they were looking for two people and released images of them. David Dubois, 19, was arrested just more than a week after the stabbing and was charged with second-degree murder. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 2016.

3. Sharif Said, 21, was shot multiple times and found by a passerby in the area of Tremblay and Belfast roads at about 6 a.m. on Sunday, May 3. He later died in hospital. A few days later police arrested Khalid Mohammad, 26, and Abdulaziz Abdullah, 28. Mohammad was charged with second-degree murder and Abdullah was charged with being an accessory after the fact. They are next scheduled to appear in court in February 2016.

4. Michael McRae, 51, was stabbed multiple times at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, in an apartment at 6632 Notre-Dame St. He was taken to hospital by paramedics where he was later pronounced dead. His father, 70-year-old John McRae, was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 2016.

5. Gail Fawcett, 54, was stabbed to death in front of the home she shared with Gino Langevin at 209 Anna Ave. on Tuesday, July 21. Langevin, 45, was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder. He was scheduled to appear in court earlier this month.

6. Issaiah Clachar, 17, was stabbed to death in the 2000-block of Jasmine Crescent in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 20. Keanu Croteau, 18, and Mohamad Hamade, 25, were both arrested the same day and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder, respectively. They were scheduled to appear in court earlier this month.

7. Dady Junior Jean, 41, was shot to death outside his apartment in the 300-block of Lacasse Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. Just less than two weeks later, police arrested and charged three people with first-degree murder: 23-year-old Johnnie Locey-Derouchie, 20-year-old Dominique Chrétien and 40-year-old Candy Locey. They were scheduled to appear in court earlier this month.

Their Metro's are near the same size too, so Ottawa overall is way way safer Even Austin as safe as it is is dangerous compared to Ottawa.

Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area (1,943,299 as of July 1, 2014.)

So let me fix that for ya Albertans *smirk*

OG - 1,318,100 | 1,703,475 (difference: 385,375 As of July 1st 2014)
So Ottawa's Region is fast approaching 1.8 Million not that much smaller than Austin!

Boise (pop: 220,000) finished 2015 with 3, due to a triple homicide.

I don't track some big cities like Milwaukee, Houston, etc., because even though there's a high number of murders, the rates are low because of the large populations. Some cities aren't free with their numbers like Dallas or Miami.

DC was 162 murders up from 106 in 2014. 162 is their highest since 2008. It used to get near 200.

most recent pop. estimate: 599,642

2015 murder rate: 25.3

Ok then 8 Murder's Total for Canada's National Capital Region.
Either way its low by most of the world's Standards. (Lower than the Canadian Average & Lower than even some places in Europe).

edit: i was curious to find out how many murders were in houston for comparison's sake, especially as it has a population rapidly approaching chicago's.

all i could find was this article projecting 281 2015 murders for the city, or about 11.5 - 12/100,00

anyone know the real #?

PPD is short on Police in regards to the numbers the force they want. Hiring has been a bit more difficult as they have raised the standards of the past several years. (Its a good thing, as well as the starting salary being approx. 6k higher today than it was 3-4 years ago.) PPD had a bit of a PR issue with several cops being arrested in a short period of time.

In regards to the unsolved murders, I believe as well as what's being reported is the current culture. There is a big "No Snitching" culture that happens in the area's where majority of murders take place. North, West and southwest Philly are notorious area's. More and more there has been an increase in the lower Northeast area, do to the growing gentrification in the Lower Kensington area. There is also quite the fear of retaliation in many of the area's.

Hope that helps.

This is a big problem in other cities as well, including Chicago.
