West Oakland: Below the Bottoms

The "Lower Bottoms" is somewhat of a misnomer for the area that was once known as Oakland Point; in reality, below 7th Street and west of Mandela Parkway lays the true "bottom" of West Oakland, South Prescott. It is a somewhat eccentric area of sorts that reminds me a little bit of Jingletown albeit with more parkland. Both South Prescott and the Lower Bottoms are home to what's arguably Oakland's best collection of Victorian homes... there's some Victorian styles in the two neighborhoods that all but don't exist in the rest of the city. Both have been undergoing gentrification in the form of new condos, rehabbing of some of the Victorians and redevelopment of the Mandela/7th St corridor, the obvious reason being its extreme proximity to SF.

Here's the photos.

The Victorians remind me of San Francisco, as you discussed, but it loks like a San Francisco neighborhood that's gone bad. Interesting nonetheless, and hopefully the Victorians are preserved.

That's the heart of Victorian Oakland.

You'd think an area right across from SF would be so convenient for commuters to relocate to, expensive, and developed...

It's an ongoing process at the moment. West Oakland will essentially become an affluent suburban neighborhood of SF if developers get their way. Gentrification has already begun in the area and it will just pick up more steam as housing prices in the city itself continue to skyrocket. I feel for the long time, lower income residents that have lived in West Oakland for generations, but I'm glad that through this gentrification, the awesome Victorian housing stock will be refurbished and remain in tact.

Yeah I almost didn't see it... it was a door to the backyard of one of the houses.
