^^ Love the couple in that shot - just off to the corner somehow not detracting from the main subject.

^ Does anyone know how they will be designed? Are we looking at suburban style grocery stores with massive parking out front, or more of an urban layout?

Good news, what's the status of the rental project on that site?

Rumors were the current owners of Carmines and the Level club on Rush were planning on a large apt rental tower at that location. Does anyone know if that also includes the Puma store to the north? I ask because the Puma retailer closed up shop, which could mean something is a stir.

The latest I've seen is they are going to build 150 apartments in a combination of 5 floor, 4 floor, and 3 flat buildings in 2 phases. The first phase of residential is supposed to be completed in the fall and the second phase will be completed in spring of 2014.

Oh wow, didn't even realize Puma had closed. I had passed by there Saturday and it still appeared open. But I was under the impression that the apartment and retail project included Puma, Proof/Sunglass Hut and Carmines. But things looked business as usual.

That area is going to be one big construction site. Might want to be strategic about closures. Sutton Place is currently closed for renovations. I can see into empty rooms from my apartment and the place looks gutted.

When all is said and done that area is going to be way better in 3 years. Lots of new shops and restaurants, and the architecture will take a major step up.

Plus the area will get some decent midrise buildings. The park will feel better scale-wise.....More enclosure, but not too tall.

Thanks, so they are starting construction on the residential portion as well.

Ask and ye shall receive (an answer to your question).

But not the answer we wanted. Has a 5-word article title ever been such a letdown?

Goodbye Puma Store, Hello Arby's
January 29, 2013

... there's a sign in the window that an Arby's is coming.

Arby's is holding on to the Chicago market as one of their major outposts, with five locations in the city limits alone. It looks like there will be a sixth as they move into one of the ritziest parts of the city.

^^^ some really disappointing news. Arby's?! I like a cheesy beef as much as the next guy, but man, how unnecessary of a location. I can't imagine it doing that well there, so hopefully it will close up shop relatively quickly.

I read the comments to the article, and it looks like it's just a joke. Notice that the sign is taped to the outside of the window.

I hope the Arby's doesn't last a year.

Edit, actually looking at the paper sign, it is likely a joke.

Dave Roeder reports that Bill Davies is now working with Joe Antunovich on a more modes plan for the Old Post Office that would include the casino.

There's no way Arby's is moving into that space.

This Casino talk is vexing. I come from Detroit, where they thought throwing up a few casinos would magically fix the city with tourism. I dont have any figures in front of me, but I'm fairly sure Detroit isn't fixed. I don't have any moral objection to casinos, but it feels like an act of desperation to try to put one in downtown Chicago on the river, a block from Sears tower.

That said, the old post office is a big tan box sitting useless in a valuable spot of the city, and the idea of it being developed into something makes me excited.

I agree in general with you. I'm not really a fan of casinos.

If one is going to be in Chicago, lets make it as classy. And hopefully stop gamblers from going to NW Indiana.

Coming from Detroit as well, I'm not sure I can completely agree. When you say "tourism" we are talking about a niche market. People that would otherwise head on up to Soaring Eagle or across the river into Windsor. There's no doubt Detroit took some of the market. And they put around the neighborhood of $180 million annually into the city coffers. Money the city needs. While fiscal management is a bigger issue, it was a win situation for Detroit and for Chicago it's merely adding more business. But the additional funding can't hurt right?
