Wow, that dude (who just passed away in March) had one hell of an illustrious career.

Wikipedia lists buildings "for which Cobb was principally responsible" and the list includes several of my all-time favorites (in addition to the Hancock Tower in Boston and Fountain Place in Dallas), including Place Ville Marie in Montreal and Library Tower in Los Angeles. He also designed the UCLA Anderson School of Management's fantastic campus-within-a-campus.

Man, that explains a ton. I could never figure out how Pei went from heavy stuff like the Chase Tower or Bushnell Tower in Hartford to light, airy glass so suddenly. Thanks for this!

The first ever ‘real’ architecture book I was given was Carter Wiseman’s 1990 monograph of Pei when I was 14. An excellent reference I highly recommend. Interestingly even that book, while it lauded Cobb, seldom mentions Freed, who was an equal partner with those two.
