Statutory Hoildays

As a periodic visitor to Nova Scotia, I came across info on your statutory holidays; or more accurately, the lack thereof.

So I wanted to post here and ask if anyone knows/has an opinion on why Nova Scotia has the fewest Statutory Holidays in North America (and for that matter, possibly the developed world)

Lest anyone want a comparison...

In Canada

Statutory Holidays
Sask - 10 Days
Alberta - 9 Days
BC - 9 Days
Man - 9 Days
ON - 9 Days
QC - 8 Days
NB - 8 Days
PEI - 7 Days
NS - 5 Days

I left out NFLD cause their system is just a bit too weird to figure out.

The U.S., btw has at least 10 Stat. Holidays.

So my good friends, why do you work so hard and never take any time off?

Not sure. I just started a new job and was pretty excited to learn that I would have 5 stats off with pay! Perhaps we could add a "Family Day" such as the Liberals in Ontario have done?

Dunno why we have so few.

Probably has to do with the fact that our government is always on vacation so they don't need Stat Holidays.

Also the fact that in the winter there's nothing to do here so everybody just goes to work and saves all of their vacation time for Summer. Speaking of which I think they should add in Natal Day as a Stat Holiday.

Oh and while its not officially a Stat Holiday everybody must get Remembrance Day off which in reality puts us up to 6 and not 5.

Funny

Its funny how people just 'accept' things.

I mean, I'm not suggesting your lack of stat holidays is matter tragic urgency.

But in Sask. they get 3 weeks paid by law, and 10 Stats, and I think if you cut that in 1/2 tomorrow people would throw an unholy fit.

While in Australia, a country very comparable to our own, not particularly left-leaning, they require 4 weeks paid; and even the hard working Japanese take 13 stat. holidays.

But most people seem to not notice or not mind getting much less.

Odd. (to me, anyway) I love my time off! And I love my job, how much more do people who hate their job need the time away?

What holidays do you get anyway?

In Ontario its:

New Years - Jan
Family Day - Feb
Good Friday - Mar/April
Victoria Day - May
Canada Day - July
Labour Day - Sept
Thanksgiving -Oct
Christmas - Dec
Boxing Day - Dec

Most people also get the first Monday in May off, but that is not required by law, its known by various as the Civic Holiday/Simcoe Day/ Col By Day

Interesting. I didn't realize there's such a big range in stat holidays. The difference between NS and Sask is equivalent to one full work week.

I think most people work too much and would be happier and more productive with more time off. As time goes on less and less labour is required but this hasn't translated into holiday time.

I for one have not "accepted" the fact that we have only 5 stat's. My girlfriend is from Ontario and I am constantly reminded on how lacking this province is. Stat holidays is just one of the conversations we have. I don't have the link available but I'm pretty sure that Nova Scotia has one of the highest rates of stress in Canada. Hmmm, highest taxes and lowest minimum wage probably has something to do with it. One extra day off in February won't fix the issue but damn it couldn't hurt.

I can tell you that I enjoyed my day off here in Calgary; granted I don't celebrate family day - but it was nice to have an extra day to get stuff done around my condo.

Plus, because my scheduled day off is this week (because I work a readjusted work week, so longer hours 9 days, to get a day off) and because of a court thing I have to deal with from my previous job - I only work 2 days. Tomorrow and Thursday...so it's going to be a awesome week.

But I didn't realize the difference was so great - this is where I agree with Dianna Whalen, family day should be in NS.

holidays

I listened to media today talking about stat holidays.
Here in Nova Scotia, we usually get
New Year's
Good Friday
Easter
Victoria Day
July 1
Civic Holiday
Labor Day
Thanksgiving
Remembrance Day
Christmas
Boxing Day
I don't know which ones are stats but I believe most people get most of these days and most get paid for them.

In the USA, I got
New Year's
Easter
Memorial Day
4th of July
Labor Day
Thanksgiving
Christmas
The only people who get any more than these are government and stock brokers.

Speaking as someone who has no children, family day is just a day to relax for me. But I am a firm believer of work life balance.

When I worked up north in Fort McMurray - I didn't really have any. We were getting applications from every direction, constantly struggling to keep staff (they could come, work a year and leave) and the development pressure was intense. Even during the recent downtown, I spoke to friends who are still up there and they couldn't even 'catch up' - which I know they were hoping to do.

But for me, these holidays are important. They help people get some time away from the stress of the office and out with family or do whatever. Trying to improve the winter blahs is also a good enough reason for me. While I know not everyone likes to Oval, imagine if a family day were in HRM. The activities that could happen? Some sort of event at the oval - where a few bands play or something like that?

Nova Scotia actually has the second highest minimum wage.

US holidays

The wikipedia article if you read it confirms just what I said.
This is federal holidays but not statutory holidays for the everyday worker in the private sector.

We really do got to get our stats in line.

Family day would be nice.

GF used to get the common 10-11? days off but they were cut back to the 5 stats only. It really adds to the stress.

And while were at it, how about a mandatory bump in your wages to coincide with increases in the minimum wage?
