Opinion--Koufax at his best (1962-1966) might have been the most dominant and overpowering pitcher ever, although Gibson, Walter Johnson, Mathewson, Feller & several others were pretty dang good too. But Koufax was consistently good and overpowered batters with strikeouts in his best years. He was the best pitcher I ever saw. This new pitcher Bueller looks promising. Happy that Kershaw finally got his ring after several missed chances.

Even if you throw in hockey, no city or major metropolitan area has won any three in a calendar year. If you broadened the qualification to winning three within a year's time, I can't think of any then either.

Not much more than a slightly educated guess and the fact that one of the other photos was from the same general area, that looks like it could be Bunker Hill Avenue.

Edit: Probably not. I looked at some photos of Bunker Hill Ave and there the sidewalk ends right at the curb, no green strip separating the sidewalk and street. It was the general look of the buildings and short setbacks that originally had me thinking that way.

I am so sorry to see all the negative attention on Justin Turner, even if one thinks it's warranted. Besides this, he is such a fine human being. He's a part of the city and does charity work all the time on behalf of various segments of the community. He was a nominee this year for MLB's Roberto Clemente Award, an annual recognition of the MLB player "who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field."

In the world we live in now you can be suddenly erased for ONE thing, despite anything else. You know the old saying about walking a mile in someone else's shoes. You've worked your whole life for something and not only is it at hand, but it happens and then...you're not supposed to have any part of it? And everyone else who has no idea about any of that judges you. Because you're not perfect? As a fan I know the feeling from afar of wanting the elusive prize...going on ten years in a row getting to the play-offs, the end stretch, and each year one step forward, two steps back, victories snatched in the last innings and one possibly snatched by a cheating scandal. And I'm a fan, not a player doing all the work. I have to give Justin Turner a pass because I cannot say that I wouldn't have done the same thing.

The eBay description is "... a newsstand in Los Angeles / possibly Hollywood." It looks like name of the store is written "National Drug Co." In the 1930 city directory, under Druggists-Retail, the closest thing is National Cut Price Drug Stores Inc 223 S Main, which is now a parking lot across from St. Vibiana's.

Do you think that object on the left side of the uncropped photo is a filming light? Is that a boom microphone at the top center, and its shadow at the bottom?

I agree largely, and Turner was one of my favorite players. Always seemed to come through in the clutch. If he had left his mask on when he came back on the field it would not have been such a big story. But he made a bad judgement. He was right next to manager Roberts, who is a cancer survivor and older. What if he gets it? Hopefully not. Hopefully this thing will be forgotten and forgiven. Dodger blue City Hall looks cool.

I was up at the observation deck shooting pics a few years ago when they came up and changed the filters on the lights, I'm not sure what was the occasion.

As most of you norishers know the Wilshire Bowl would become Slapsy Maxie's in 1943.

In the 15 years I’ve been researching and writing about the Garden of Allah Hotel, one thing I’ve learned is that you never know when things will come to the surface. Back in December 2012, I posted a photograph on my website from 1960 showing that of one of the original hotel signs had found a home in Michigan. In 2016, I found a wonderful photo from 1951 showing the sign in all its glory. I never did find out how it came to be in Michigan and worried that its exposure to that extreme weather might be the end of it. And then, out of the blue earlier this week, a collector contacted me to let me know that he now had the sign and it was sitting in his garage until he had the time to restore it. I asked if he would send me a photo – and he did. I’m so relieved that it’s still around and that we might one day see it restored to its former glory.



He’s also got the original neon tubing! He said it mostly broken into pieces but will make recreating it a lot easier:

I sure miss this building. Pic posted by ethereal_reality on first page of his blog, 2009.

Today this building would be preserved. The ARCO Plaza could have been built around it, but in 1968/69 it's value was not appreciated.

Everybody should go back to the first pages of this blog (2009) and enjoy all the pics. Start with page 1, and work forward 5 pages a day. I didn't find this blog until a year ago, so I have a lot of catching up to do.

Another old gem. Hollywoodland. I wouldn't have the guts to dangle like that. Best prank ever--when the brainiaks at a certain university changed the Hollywood sign to read "Cal Tech" and did the same with the halftime card drill at the Rose Bowl. Harmless pranks that made everybody laugh. We need more laughs today. Enough grimness. The Cal Tech nerds need to get back in the prank game.

So to develop the whole block they needed a partner(Bank of America) to help share the costs of the new headquarters.

The Richfield Building wasn't forgotten at ARCO, the lobby for the executive floors on the 50th floor had about a 4' model of the building. I really wonder what happened to that model after ARCO vacated the tower and moved to the old Security Pacific building and then being acquired by bp.

It would have taken a bit of imagination, a smaller plaza, perhaps an additional block for the second tower for BA. Perhaps a city waiver. Unfortunately the Richfield tower was not valued as something to be preserved in the late 1960s. When Wells Fargo built a new 43 story HQ in SF in the late '60s, it didn't tear down the old HQ. It was preserved, and I believe it now is the HQ again. The 43 story was sold. Maybe the bank still rents space in it. Not sure.

Ironically, BA moved out of ARCO/BA plaza a few years later when it took over Security Pacific & moved into the Bunker Hill tower of SP. ARCO was taken over so they left too. BA also closed it's SF headquarters & moved to Charlotte. So, we lost ARCO and we lost the Richfield tower, and we have two 52 story dominos with high vacancy which some people like. If they had of kept the Richfield tower with one or two new towers, maybe the complex would be much more rented out today. We'll never know. Ancient history.

At least we value our past landmarks more than we used to. Look at Broadway, Spring, 7th etc. Fortunately so much of the old still survives. Cities that preserve the best of the old when they build the new are much more interesting places.
