I mean technically they are "by the water" it's just blocked by other builds, to the East is the Docks/port to the West is the Girard estates/refinery neighborhood which that's the area I'm assuming you are saying they should have built it in, which would have drastically changed that area. maybe it can be done in the future after the refinery area is cleaned up.

They really should have built it in the Navy yard, which would have pushed the development of the navy yard further, extended BSL while also giving room to build something totally different where the current sports site is, as well as creating another riverfront area Philly would have like 3 different cities in 1.

I lived in Pittsburgh while they were building the stadiums and the riverfront casino. The North Side got beautiful riverfront parks and tree-lined streets. It did not create a community of any kind. mostly low-rise commercial buildings and hotels. I really wish Philly had put aside more acreage while it was thought of as worthless, to form a continuous waterfront park.

Construction is continuing on all philadelphia construction sites. Kenney said they are too dangerous left unattended on short notice so they will continue until the city is criplled by the pandemic (like spanish flu)

What are you talking about? Where did you see this? Most major sites have until this Friday to prepare for a halt of construction.

No it is not, and no he didn't. Many have already shut down. Others are shoring up everything to terminate on Friday, the default day for compliance. A few have gotten waivers and will have longer to shut down because longer is needed to shut them down safely.

This "fake news" about ongoing construction is the most asinine thing I've heard in awhile. Suggesting that it would continue until we're "crippled" by a pandemic "like Spanish Flu," rather misses the point. This is a pandemic and we don't want it to be crippling, like Spanish Flu, where this city famously punted on taking important measures and therefore had double the number of deaths of St. Louis, which took action: https://qz.com/1816060/a-chart-of-th...9wjnb3Dr1oPULA

Right. I saw on action news that this particular project got a waiver, though.

I think something is getting confused and I think it entirely has to do with poor information from one poster.

This project getting a waiver doesn't go against any of the legitimate sourced information we've gotten on what is happening with construction in Philadelphia. It is kind of understandable that this building would receive a waiver even though it's far from essential, because it's considerably far into its construction and may be legitimately difficult to tie up quickly without the building sustaining damage from what may be a prolonged delay in construction.

Even still though, this building is not going to be continuing as they would have were we not in the middle of weathering a global pandemic. The waiver is simply extra time to comply with the order to stop construction. Now stopping construction, may necessitate continuing construction to a certain point to secure the building, but it's still all about getting this building to the point where they can secure it and stop construction. It's not like they'll be finishing it and opening for business.

All construction is stopping in Philadelphia, except for medical projects like Penn's Pavilion and projects that need extra time to safely stop construction, like this casino. That's it. Everything else is stopping and they certainly aren't going to continue building as normal in the city until Philadelphia is in a crisis due to this pandemic. I don't know where arkitect13 got this crazy idea, but it seems clear Kenney didn't actually say anything like that.

There was a post on Philly Reddit today, that attached a copy of a letter from Gilbane, who is overseeing construction of this complex telling employees that someone on site tested positive for covid-19, but work was continuing. The post has been taken down since earlier today, but might be something to keep an eye out for, hopefully there isn't an outbreak among workers at this site. Stay safe.

‘Life-sustaining’ casino? Construction continued in South Philly despite Gov. Wolf’s coronavirus shutdown. At least one worker tested positive.

https://www.inquirer.com/news/casino...-20200407.html

Quote:
As the coronavirus spread across the region last month and Gov. Wolf ordered a halt to all but life-sustaining business, construction workers on the site of the new Live! Hotel & Casino in South Philadelphia were growing increasingly concerned for their safety.

They reported to work each day, but many fretted that the general contractor, Gilbane Building Company, wasn’t doing enough to protect them from being infected.

While many businesses shut down, construction continued on the $700 million casino, one of the most expensive projects in the city. Hundreds of workers traveled to the site on Packer Avenue near Citizens Bank Park — some from as far away as New York and Maryland.

On March 26, a positive COVID-19 case surfaced. The worker had been on the project for two days, most recently on March 17.

Some of the unions are trying to pull their workers off the site.

Don't they know some people like to take pictures of the casino? Very inconsiderate.

I agree. The parking garage looks terrible. Now we need a low-rise building to block that view - and fast.

I bet the garage will have a fantastic view of the skyline and ballpark, that I can't wait to see from there
