I left Halifax in 1989. I'm pretty sure this saga was ongoing back then too......

I think the fire happened in 1994. There was also a fire a block away, and that lot eventually became Barrington Gate.

The Birks site was demolished around 1990 or so.

I think this is a case of something looking awful as its so run down, but once restored, it's going to look great and help maintain some of the historical and heritage dimensions of this important street.

I wish it were not so glacial in its development, but later is better than never, I suppose.

It has been slow on average but the progress lately has been quick. It looks very different even from the pictures from May.

This building looked so awful before that I think the new one will make a big positive difference on the street. The only remaining bad chunk of Barrington, aside from active construction sites, is the empty lot by the Dennis Building.

The Design Review Committee considered some amendments to this development on December 17. I'm not sure what the outcome was. It looks like the biggest change is the developer wants to add 2 floors on top.

I think it's great how Barrington is getting these upper floor additions that are adding density while maintaining the heritage streetscape at ground level. Barrington Espace turned out nicely and a similar redevelopment of the former Little Mysteries building is planned as well.

Looks good, though I guess that means no chance of the old spite ever getting rebuilt. (Not that that would be too likely anyway, I guess.)

The spire would not be permitted under the current viewplane rules.

The weirdly small dome on top of Salter's Gate is similarly designed to fit under the viewplane.

There should be exemptions for decorative architectural features but it's not worth it for any individual developer to delay their project and fight for something like that.

That's all well and good, but I'd rather see slow progress than rushing through it and creating a mess. There has been steady progress and I like the look of the proposal. My feelings pretty much echo someone123's on this one.
