Roadworks on SB Henderson between McLeod and Leighton finishing up.

Good news: the crosswalk is replaced by a traffic signal. I’m very happy to see this as pedestrians have been killed here.

Bad news: the new traffic signal has 5, yes 5, lights both SB and NB. Most traffic signals along Henderson have 2 lights, some 3, and Chief Peguis 4. Five seems a bit over the top.

Are there any other traffic signals in Winnipeg with this many lights?

I believe the intersection at Kenaston and Sterling Lyons have 6 sets of lights on one side (technically 9 if you count the ones for the dedicated right hand turn) but that is also a huge intersection.

It sounds like a pedestrian half signal. Same as what is in place at Main and Assiniboine, for example. There are 5 traffic light heads going north there as well. Only 2 going south though.

That being said, does anybody have any idea how they're going to configure the mess? I mean, the sensible thing would be to just have it all go straight over the tracks and continue on as Plessis but I guess that's not going to happen.
We chatted about this recently. Even drew up some plans, maybe in this thread. Seems like limited options. And there is an industrial park going in on the north side of Fermor at Plessis. They've already started site works. Really hoops the Cities chances over there. They'd likely have to push further east through some of the businesses.

Ah, right. I thought that that was just hopes and prayers. I guess it still is.

Just hopes and prayers haha.. The City had planned a ring road study starting 3 years ago. But it's been pushed back indefinitely.

On my way to Seven Oaks Hosp. for dialysis I travel via taxi along
Sturgeon Rd. Some place north of Portage is what appears to be a roundabout intersection, except its not. I dont know what street this is due to my poor eyesight.

Why was that intersection designed that way? Its weird.

^ Sounds like the junction of Sturgeon, Silver and Murray Park. They turned it into a traffic circle some years back, like maybe 10 years ago. I'm not sure why, maybe too many collisions there?

It's an intersection that gets heavy traffic at particular times of the day due to nearby factories shifts. Flows much better now.

It's a round about with a bypass lane for the EB to NB route.

I was just laying diwn for a nap and "Sault St. Marie" word phrase came into my mind. A minute later I see in my mind's eye a lift bridge with black girders. The image appeared for a split second. Doing a YouTube search, I found what I think I remote viewed just a few minutes ago...

Video Link

Which got me thinking...

I remember, decades ago, in the late 1960s and 70s, Winnipewg had a lift bridge somewhere, at the old Provencher or another Bridge. Does anyone remember it?

^ I don't recall Winnipeg having a lift bridge like the one in the Soo, but there is one in Selkirk. I'm not sure about its operational status, though.

Provencher was a draw bridge, not quite the same.

I believe the old rail bridge that's now a pedestrian bridge at the forks was a lift bridge as well, but I believe it's the same style as the above.

The one at the forks is also a type of draw bridge, I believe. It only lifted one side, by moving the big weight up or down. I could be wrong though.

The article says it rumoured to never have been lifted.

If nothing else I would have thought that CN's B&B department would have run it from time to time just to make sure it did work in case there was a real need to open it.

It also said the other bridge to the west, I presume what is the main track bridge, also had the same counterweight, etc. But it was taken down long ago.

However, I also believe there was at least one other bridge located between the 2 current bridges.

I wonder if someone has ever compiled all the old bridge locations onto a map. There has been a lot in the downtown forks area.

Do you mean this one, to the east?

There's still 3 months left.

I believe MI is still working with the design-build consortiums on the bids. Which IIRC were due Septemberish.

We discussed the only likely work this year will be possibly construction detours and staging type works. To get ready for structures work over the winter. Real roadworks won't start until next spring.

They'll still be working on final designs once the contract is awarded. At this stage they're only in the 30% -60% design level. Enough to cost out somewhat accurately.
