I watched the game. The Canucks got outplayed for most of the game except for Markstrom. He stood on his head all night. He stole a game for him...but that's what you need from your goalie from time to time.

Oh for sure, if you want success in this league you need your goalie to steal a game for you now and again.

Both teams have had games where they've been the better team but lost, and also got lucky getting 2 points.

Speaking of goalies stealing games, Georgiev stopped 55 of 56 shots last night vs the Leafs.

Pretty impressive to be able to put 56 shots on net! And that goalie must have lost 10 pounds with that much work to do lol

The Canucks really miss Edler when he's not in the lineup. There isn't really anyone to make up his minutes.

Hopefully Hughes can make the jump from NCAA to NHL next year. Who knows what will happen with Juolevi...

The Flames have lost 2 in a row so they are going to come out really strong. The Canucks are not very good when Edler's out. Flames are guaranteed to win tonight.

And yeah, two assists and the only goal in the shootout is a "quiet night" for Pettersson, right?

That’s a hockey spell.

It worked didn’t it?

If anything good happens with Juoevi, I’ll consider that a bonus. As of now he is a lost high draft pick (due to major injuries).

By all accounts, Hughes is an elite talent and should easily make the team next year. We’ll get a good look at him near the end of this year as Michigan looks to be out of it early.

Here’s a hypothetical game for you Canadian hockey fans called Keep or Trade. Identify your team and whether you would keep your star player or trade him for any one of the other stars. If you select trade indicate the player you’re picking up in exchange.

Vancouver -Pettersson
Edmonton - Draisaitl (McDavid would be too easy)
Calgary - Gaudreau
Winnipeg - Laine
Toronto - Matthews
Ottawa - Stone
Montreal - Kotkaniemi

Age is a factor.. would Ottawa fans trade Stone for the potential of Kotkaniemi? While he may not reach Stone’s level you’re gaining a lot of years.
Startig to lean towards 'trade' for Draisatl. The guys seems absolutely incapable and unwilling to play any kind of defensive game whatsoever.

^The only thing Edmonton has proven they can develop over the years is a losing attitude and maybe a desire to not put in any effort. It's unbelievable that they even had players like Ryan Smyth and Jordan Eberle over the years. How their work ethic survived the years of toiling in Edmonton is nothing but magical.

An elite centre trumps an elite winger (sorry Gaudreau). So that leaves Pettersson or Matthews who are also still very young. As a Canucks fan I would keep Pettersson. He does more than Matthews.

I think it was when they traded Smyth that the wheels fell off, they seemed to sort it out 2 years ago, but then Talbot showed he's not an elite goalie and they came crashing back to earth.

Matthews negative one on the season, playing for a team with a +40 goal differential. He didn't get that by playing the tough defensive minutes either.

Hainsey's +27, might as well hand him the Norris.

Hainsey hasn’t been a liability every time he plays a shift in his own end.

He also isn't scoring at a 1.15/game pace.

You have some serious tunnel vision regarding Matthews' last two months.

Two months is an eternity for a guy who has just played two seasons of hockey. I’d be much more forgiving if Matthews didn’t think so highly of himself, but when you want to be the best paid player you’re going to have higher expectations than being top 15 in projected points. Matthews needs to bring something to justify that contract.

Matthews has regressed in virtually every aspect of his game this season. He doesn’t battle for pucks any more, makes no second effort on his plays, and stands around admiring the puck when it’s in his own. He’s still coasting off a blistering hot start that inflates his PPG, but even that is looking less and less impressive when you consider that goal scoaring is up league wide.

Give him a break. He literally just signed the contract.

This doesn't happen overnight...

They didn't have it sorted out 2 years ago. Talbot had an okay season and the Oilers had a lot of puck luck. As has been shown by Carey, Kolzig, Lehtonen, etc., one great season does not a great goaltender make.

Talbot was great as a backup in New York. But then being a backup to Lundqvist us a great gig with little ressure on you to be great so just go out and play. It's not like you are challenging for the starter role there. He had a decent 2016-2017 season, but that was only a .919 save percentage over a .917 the year before. .002 does not usually equate to 21-27-5 versus 42-22-8. Maybe it does, but I'd say there's more to it than that in the 216-2017 season. Like a lot of luck on the Oilers part which wasn't really sustainable.
