And the better alternative was what? To trade all 3 RFAs? The Leafs have been hit by a combination of unfortunate (and some fortunate) events all aligning at the same time. As far as I'm concerned, Dubas has maneuvered through the situation as best as possible to give the team a solid 5 year window to win the cup. The team is far more hamstrung by Lou's actions than by what Dubas has done in the last three months.

Nylander should have been traded or forced to sit out the season. It was that contract that set the market. When a secondary player like him can make 7 million a year on an RFA contract, of course guys like Matthews and Marner are going to ask for the moon.

Nylander isn't a comparable for Matthews or Marner and his name likely never entered the conversation during negotiations.

Matthews wanted Mcdavid's percentage of cap on a 8 year deal which would be upwards of $13.8 million on next years salary cap. If he and his agent have overvalued him that much, there's not much you can do but settle on a more reasonable term that unfortunately takes him into UFA status earlier than you would like. Ask any gm in the league if they would want 5 years of Matthews at $11.6, or the subpar return you would get for trading his RFA rights if you go into another game of chicken next season.

Definitely agree Nylander should have been traded the second he sat out.

Lol at the Oilers, how can a team just always be so completely shitty? a once great franchise is now a complete joke!!!

That might be exactly what he wants.

Rumours were Matthews was looking around $12M for 8 years in the summer.

It's pretty clear that Matthews would have be signed to an offer sheet. Is it better to pay a bit more for the Leafs to sign a deal they could live with, or have your hand forced by another team? Dubas made the best deal he could.

I have know idea how they're so bad with the best player in a generation.
I actually feel sorry for them. Not the fans yet tho

They're so bad because they don't have depth, they traded Eberle and Hall for next to nothing, haven't drafted or traded for defensemen very well, and their star goalie burned out 2 years ago. The success of the Flames this year shows what having stable goaltending will do, the players are having fun and their production reflects that. We wouldn't have 5 or 6 guys on pace for career years if we had sub-par goaltending and the players were miserable due to losing most games. I think a lot of people underestimate the mental aspects of hockey, especially in the era of advanced statistics because it's tough to quantify.

And yet amazingly they are only 3 points out of the last playoff spot in the west and a first round match-up with (hopefully) the Flames.

The Matthews camp was floating anything between three years and eight years and both parties ended up agreeing on five.

Under the current CBA offer sheets are a complete waste of time and draft picks. Nobody worth anything would consider one as things currently stand.

I fully support Matthews signing with Arizona as a UFA in his late 20s.

I don't think Ken Holland qualifies as a nobody...

Talk is cheap. We'll see if anyone ever actually has the guts to give up 4 first round picks for a Matthews-type contract.

Flames finally play again tonight, first game since Sunday, and 3rd game since the all star break, so basically 3 games in 2 weeks lol.

Even with 4 first rounders you are probly not going to get a Matthews level talent. And out of those 4 first rounders, 2 probly won’t make it or they’ll be roll players, unless you’re getting top 5 all 4 picks. Not likely though.

McDavid. Now. Worth every bit of the four first rounders and a Cam Talbot.

Great game by Matthews last night. Picked up a lucky rebound, and then spent the rest of the night standing around waiting for the puck to come to him.

$11.6 million well spent.

If we keep going like this, we might be able to beat a team like the Sens in a 7 game series.

Would like to see Pettersson standing around waiting for the puck more often. He skates so far back into his own zone to play defence, he takes himself out of play for an offensive rush coming back. Probly could have 30 goals by now if he was more selfish.
