A couple of years ago this shopping mall was voted the ugliest building in the UK.

^ that is the weirdest looking building. Did they just randomly attach new parts? What is the floating level for?

It started life in the 60s as a concrete megastructure.

The idea was that it would sit above a main road, so people could drive to the shopping centre and then walk around the shops without having to worry about traffic. I believe the floating structure was orignally intended for 'executive' apartments.

Over the years, a few half-hearted attempts were made to make it more friendly - for example the floating level was painted black and white and some parts have been demolished - but the overall effect was to make it even more disjointed.

Other efforts to spruce up the building (the pictures below were taken from the opposite end) have hardly been more successful.

I guess the moral is, if you're going for brutalism, don't do it by halves!

Has no one yet mentioned the "crack stacks" or the "ghetto in the sky" in Minneapolis? Despite Minneapolis's beautiful skyline, these somehow managed to get built:

Bad photo. Ugly building. This pile of faux Bavarian vomit sits next to I-74 in Bettendorf and greets people coming into the Quad Cities.
If the photo was more clear you could bask in it's hideousness like I do every day.

why cant this faux sh¡t be a faux pas in our society?

here lies the problem with brutalism: most people typically need a half-way decent art education to appreciate it for what it is, and lets face it, most of us are not getting it (at least in usa).

Tour Montparnasse is an abomination, only because it utterly does not fit into the surrounding urban fabric. I visited this summer past...great view from the top, but fugly one from the bottom.
