Melnyk prepared to spend close to salary cap to build a winner

I suppose step one is securing the overall number one draft pick this year...no wait, that's Colorado's.

As of me typing this five teams cannot do this (BUF, CBJ, DAL, PIT, SJ) not including teams that are spending at the cap/don't have the cap room next season. DET could potentially do this (they have roughly $13M in cap space allotted for next season if they let Nyquist, Vanek, Kronwall, Jensen, Howard, and Witkowski walk, along with a slew of prospects and AHL players) but it would tie their hands for their 2019 draft which wouldn't make much sense for a team in a rebuild.

If a team offer sheets Marner for anything less than $10 million and he accepts it (he wouldn't) than Dubas matches the offer and sends them a gift basket for doing the negotiating for him.

Wouldn’t mind paying Marner 11.6 million a year. He comes to play every night, unlike certain players who seem to think they’re on a conditioning stint.

Canucks lose in overtime, but at least Pettersson gets another step closer to breaking Bure's rookie goal scoring record.

Before the season started, I declared Pettersson's shot was as good as Boeser's. I was so wrong. His shot has gotta be top 5 in the league.

Pettersson's not playing with skilled wingers and with the success he's had in the past against Calgary, the Flames are really going to focusing on him tonight. Expecting a quiet night from him. Horvat is getting Boeser back on his line, so let's hope that helps him break the slump he's in.

The Flames have lost 2 in a row so they are going to come out really strong. The Canucks are not very good when Edler's out. Flames are guaranteed to win tonight.

Good grief.. hope Pettersson doesn’t get stuck with those wingers all night.

Here’s a hypothetical game for you Canadian hockey fans called Keep or Trade. Identify your team and whether you would keep your star player or trade him for any one of the other stars. If you select trade indicate the player you’re picking up in exchange.

Vancouver -Pettersson
Edmonton - Draisaitl (McDavid would be too easy)
Calgary - Gaudreau
Winnipeg - Laine
Toronto - Matthews
Ottawa - Stone
Montreal - Kotkaniemi

Age is a factor.. would Ottawa fans trade Stone for the potential of Kotkaniemi? While he may not reach Stone’s level you’re gaining a lot of years.

Funny you mention that, I was just thinking tonight the Leafs would be better off trading Matthews.

He was strangely invisible tonight. Let’s hope he has a good playoffs and shows he deserves the big bucks.

My sense is that 90% of fans will keep their star. Although for Winnipeg are they worried about Laine’s inconsistency and defensive play?

Hes been invisible for the past two months, since he came back from his shoulder injury. Just incredibly passive and disinterested. Either he doesn't want to be here or is just not very good, so the Leafs should just get some value and cap relief by moving him.

They won't, but they should.

You can say that the Flames badly outplayed the Canucks and deserved to win, then again, Markstrom played a hell of game, and he plays for the Canucks too. Canucks deserved that win.

Lol at Flames fans. (Was perusing CP) Maybe Rittich isn't playing his best, but they are blaming him for goals that are unstoppable. Nobody's stopping that Boeser shot. And the relentless moaning and complaining about Dave Randorf was hilarious.

The complaints about Randorf are completely valid. He's absolutely biased against the Flames, and I can't stand when he calls games.

LOL.

Goalie stealing a game while standing on his head does not equal deserved to win.

Didn't see the game, but Markstrom stopping 44 of 47 shots is quite impressive. Also, the Canucks obviously didn't deserve to win, they allowed their goalie to be peppered with 47 shots for fuck sakes! Canucks fans are a special breed... lol

Leafs got stonewalled on 55 of 56 shots to lose 4 - 1. We've won our fair share of games getting outshot and bailed out by Freddy over the past few years, but it's still frustrating when karma comes around.
