They modernised it around the 1990s, and have since replaced it with this bland wave (?) motif

Was this used as a film location in Strange Brew or Austin Powers? That looks like an evil lair. So damn cool! Any backstory on why this is situated in what appears to be a cave?

Speaking of lighthouses, I was glad the refresed Halifax logo didn't include one. Sorry if it's already been done here. I only scrolled a few pages back.

From a CBC article:

Wreck Cove collects drainage water from 216 square kilometres of the Cape Breton Highlands plateau to generate electricity. It's a unique plant, in that it was constructed in the side of the mountain and provides some interesting visuals for visitors.

Google "Wreck Cove Hydroelectric Station" for photos.

No it is Ernst Blofel's Japanese mountain crater cave in "You only live twice"

Ya I seem to recall at some point I put a collage together of the logos or wordmarks of all the major cities and I commented that this one is amazing.

James Bond : Oh, I like the plumbing.

Tiger Tanaka : Place yourself entirely in their hands, my dear Bond-san. Rule number one: is never do anything yourself - when someone else can do it for you.

James Bond : And number two?

Tiger Tanaka : Rule number two: in Japan, men come first, women come second.

James Bond : I just might retire to here.

I'm actually laughing at the crazy hairy chest...
I know, it's not his fault at all. The poor boy's not responsible for that trolling chest hair, but he still looks like a gorilla petted by more advanced humans (you know, women...).

I'm not sexist and I know very well how mean and nasty women can be.
But let's face it, we men have been even worse on average.
Ah, c'est bête, hein.

Regarde-moi ce singe en train de se baigner au milieu de 4 femmes. Ça n'a absolument aucun sens.
Même dans ma meilleure forme, je suis incapable de satisfaire ces 4 femmes à la fois.
Parce qu'elles doivent être affamées, en plus !

C'est simplement le vieux sexisme grossier, là. Faut arrêter ce délire, les gars.

Even my English doesn't include the word "kerning"!

Haha, my home town. The word is "crénage".

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu's logo has some sort of meaning though. It was adopted after the merger of 5 towns in 2001. The 5 waves represent the river and the 5 former municipalities. The logo is divided in 2 parts representing each shore - the "ring shape" is for the union. The two people also represent the union of the historically divided to sides of the river. The negative space between the arms of the 2 people evokes the shape of a house - the house is for the quality of life in the town... Well. It's a logo.

There's just something so creepy about trying to portray the image of people in logos. It's also supposed to portray wheat. I'd rather they had just tried to portray wheat and not creepy stick people, like SK provincial logos.

I do like the linking of the D and O though.

"Or sometimes not at all."

Ah yes the Sean Connery Bond films. Is that the one where he wears yellowface? Or the one where he straight up rapes a woman?

Then again it wasn't just the Connery films with WTF moments. I'm pretty sure Timothy Dalton helped out the Taliban at one point.

I was organizing my fishing pics from this past season into folders and stumbled upon this logo I created a few years ago and it reminded me of this thread.

I have no design background and don't have Photoshop. What I have is Gimp, a free program that's similar. I know more than the basics, but when my bro in law wanted a trophy for the fishing tournament we have every year, he wanted a logo so he commissioned me to do it. Not gonna lie, it took like 2 hours to do this and I had to take a tutorial on layering to get this right.

So if someone like me, who is far from a professional, can make this logo, which I think is pretty decent, why can't so many cities come up with something better?

Of course, I pulled a couple of stock animated images, so that made it easier, but even if a city couldn't afford to hire a design firm and pay like 50 grand for a few hours work, could they not have gotten the design dept. from the local or nearby college to come up with something for a fraction of the price? Or have a design competition for locals only? I just watched a video about how Mississippi had a contest for the new flag and they settled on one non-pro's design as the core of the new flag and added a couple elements from others.

I know many of these towns and cities had their logos done decades ago but some were not so long ago and are pretty bad. You get the feeling they just had someone from the city staff sketch something on paper and said okay cool, that's our new logo.

Perhaps Otacular can offer some insight.

^good stuff.

Otacular has developed fabulous logos for Laval, and more specifically for that city's tallest building. Eddy Savoie is eternally grateful.

Not sure if posted before but it is interesting to see this 1959 sketch of the CN logo, which certainly appears to have inspired CNN (with added cable and letter) years later.
