To Edmonton Management: loser points will not get you into the playoffs.

I think every player involved in the Calgary - Carolina trade scored a point in the game yesterday, hilarious!

Matthews signs 5 year $58.17M contract extension. $54.5M in signing bonuses and $3.65M in salary lol.

Next up, Marner! (though it sounds like that will be in the summer)

Does that mean he will get his money even if there is a labor disruption since most of it is signing bonus rather than salary? Sweet deal if true.

I think that's how it works, and it's lower taxes too I believe.

Alex Edler landed face-first on the ice last night and had to be stretchered off. This season the Canucks are 4-9-2 without him in the lineup, so his loss is going to be a huge blow to their playoff chances.

Hopefully he'll be okay, it was a scary moment.

That Matthews deal is atrocious given how he has played this year. Maybe even worse than Nylanders contract. He will be booed out of town within the next 5 years.

Agreed. I am a Leafs fan and I love this deal. Any longer of a term and Matthews is getting 13-14 Mil a season and you can kiss Marner goodbye. Also, Matthews is the best all around forward they have on the team and has the potential to be a very top player in the league. All that plus he is a big center man. People that are thinking Marner is better and deserves more are crazy.

In a year where there are 40 players that are PPG. That shouldn’t earn him a Connor McDavid contract. Matthews has been invisible for the last two months. Should not have gotten paid a cent more than Eichel on an 8 year contract, let alone 1.5 million on a 5 year contract.

They even gave him a NMC in his last year. What a disaster.

5 year term is going to be the new normal coming off your ELC. It's so strongly in the players best interest to get to UFA/third contract as soon as possible.

Matthews will easily make up the difference between his deal and McDavid's in his next contract.

He's 13th overall based on points per game (1.21 vs Eichel's 1.13), and on pace for career highs in points and assists. Not sure he's worth $11.63M/year, but he's in the upper echelon of NHL players and expects to be paid accordingly.

$11.6 is fine for a guy whose been top of the league in even strength goal scoring per game since he was drafted. Gm's don't value a players' next 5 years based on their last two months.

Should've been 6 years at that rate, but the Leafs are in a precarious position and don't have as much leverage as they'd like.

Looks like the Leafs are going full Oiler loading up with cap eating contracts that will force them to gut the team of good role players. Never go full Oiler!

Difference being the Leafs don't have any dead money like the Oilers do with Lucic and Co.

Jersey Toss

Oiler fans reinstitute the jersey toss as Hawks scored 5 in the 3rd and beat the Oilers 6-2.

In a league with comparables like Pastrnak and Mackinnon, Matthews should not be paid 11.6 million for a measly 1 year of UFA. What the heck was he demanding for an 8 year contract?

Dubas has screwed the Leafs cap situation. Nylander is a good 1 million overpaid, Matthews probably 1.5-2 million. Marner is not going to be accepting any less than Matthews either. That's $5 million in cap space between the 3.

Was there...

Maybe the best 1st of the year.

Complete collapse after that.

Talbot's departure from the ice was fast, furious and symbolic.... count my words.

It's funny reading the Oilers game day thread that goes from a glimmer of hope in the 2nd period to hopeless resignation in the 3rd. The Oilers need Kakko so bad.
