Yes, that was his perch. It's also where he died. Saturday was the 43rd anniversary of the tower shootings. My grandfather worked on campus and was there that day. He said he could see the puff of smoke from Whitman's rifle.

Some of the bullet holes were left in some of the buildings and in other surfaces on campus. This one was left on the wall of the observation deck on the tower. This bullet would have come from an APD officer shooting back at Whitman.

That is Watterson Towers. It looks like absolute jailhouse architecture on the inside. I believe it still holds the title for tallest college dormitory, unless something at NYU or downtown Chicago has beaten it. Not sure.

That's the chapel tower.

At the top of the photo (far end of the main quad) is the medical school with the modern (non-Gothic) buildings of the hospital visible.

And it looks very similar to old parts of Univ of Florida. Does anyone have any insight as to why this gothic brick was so popular for schools?

everytime I hear about Duke University, I think of a racist university, because thats my main mental link with the 'duke" word.

My only guess would be that it was during the Gothic period that the idea of the modern university was formed. During the 1200s guilds started conglomerating in cities where they were more effective in recruiting new members and teaching them their skills. This eventually morphed into the university system with professors and students.

When a lot of universities were founded in the US, it was popular to style the architecture of a building in homage to it's historical roots, e.g civic buildings in the Neo Classical style representing the Greek culture, the first democracy.

Again just a guess, but you are right, the gothic style is popular on a lot of campuses.

David Duke is from Louisiana and no relation (that I know of) to Washington Duke ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Duke ) of North Carolina for whom the University is named and with whose money it was built. Said money came from selling unknowable quantities of these:

So you would be better associating the school with lung cancer than with racism (although today it hosts a major government funded cancer research program and an excellent clinical oncology--cancer treatment--department).

If you insist on negative associations, you could also go with a well-known graduate of (if not exactly a recommendation for) its law school: Richard Nixon.

Actually, I also spent 2 years at the U. of FL and was going to post that but I couldn't find a good aerial shot.

In Duke's case, it's not brick but stone and that's because the school took huge advantage of the Depression (since it was one of the few institutions in the mid-south to have plenty of money then). It bought a stone quarry, built a rail line from said quarry directly down the main quad, imported a crew of Italian stone masons and started building. I'm not sure who they used as an architect.

They also, by the way, bought vast swaths of land around the buildings, now known as Duke Forest and the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The garden is extraordinarily beautiful (think huge masses of azaleas in bloom) in springtime and the forest has all sorts of uses .

There is the old snub that the older eastern colleges would use against many of the newer universities in the midwest and west. They called them "brick universities", as opposed to the venerable "stone universities". It was also a derogatory term used by the really old universities in the UK towards the newer "Red Brick" civic universities there.
