Fabulous news. I was impressed with how Halifax has changed since I lived there. Halifax keeps getting better and better.

Thanks. I've always found that row of housing interesting so when it was posted I knew I'd seen it before somewhere.

I am sorry to say it, because I am mostly a positive person in life, but I really find not much appealing about Moncton

It's quite alright to have an unfavourable opinion when it's expressed politely.. most people aren't as kind.
I think Moncton's downtown looks quite cute personally, but I think the river view.. with the murky muddy clay water is quite unappealing myself but presents itself with a lot of potential to do something attractive.

Fair enough. I don't mean to say it couldn't get better in the future but right now, I am much more interested about St. John and even Fredericton.
I agree that the river really doesn't help tho...

From personal experience, yes, Fredericton is more beautiful and St. John is criminally underrated with some of the best large scale intact historic bones anywhere in the country. However, Moncton isn’t half bad either, the main downtown strip is pretty good, with many high quality local shops and restaurants. There is also a decent historic neighbourhood just behind the main strip and there are many outstanding churches right in the area as well. As for the Petitcodiac river, that’s actually very cool! How many other cities have such a rich, fertile, muddy river flowing through it with incredible tide changes! The colour is gorgeous (I’ve included my pic of it below, right in Moncton).

Yes it does have too much sprawl for a small city, and I’m not sure why/how there is such a split between Dieppe and Moncton, or the need for that since they are within a stone’s throw of each other, but hey, the downtown is still better than pretty much any western Canadian city of the same size, and most of those cities have less shopping downtown and just as much big box stores and malls as Moncton. Not to mention their downtown in clearly on the way up. I’m not a big fan of that huge transmission tower, but it’s probably no uglier than the Calgary Tower to be honest. And similar to Calgary, but in a low key way, the city has a can do attitude that is honest and you can’t help but respect it. I’ve never encountered such professional, polite and genuinely friendly service no matter where we went automatically in French or English where ever we went. Two thumbs up for Moncton all the way from other coast, here in Victoria

I reposted those photos from Moncton mostly to show the tower cranes in the downtown, not to accentuate the "beauty" of the city.

Moncton is not like other Maritime cities. Although European settlement in the city can be traced back to 1733, the city didn't take off until the late 1840s, and didn't really start to grow rapidly until the 1880s (railway boom). As such, Moncton is newer than other Maritime cities, and somewhat less institutional and more commercial and industrial in it's appearance. In many ways, it has more in common with mid sized western Canadian cities than it's Maritime cousins.

Moncton is an acquired taste. I've lived here now for 32 years, and am quite happy here. I've always said Moncton has a lot of potential, and I'm still saying it. Moncton is now the largest and the most rapidly growing city in NB. We should be over 175,000 people in five years time, and I hope to see 200,000 before I drop off this mortal coil. The downtown is finally seeing substantial growth. Moncton is a work in progress - stay tuned.

PS - you are certainly free to express your opinion, and as long as you are not mean, I take no offence. Some people can be quite vicious in their criticism. I have never thought that about you.

Interesting!

Oh, you know, I'm only asking to be convinced that it isn't what I think it is! I went thru Moncton by car, but never stopped for a walk actually.

My point of view about cities & places are always evolving. Take Trois-Rivières per example. For most of my life, I drived on A40 between Quebec city and Montreal and Trois-Rivières was my "pipi stop" but I never got interested about this place until recently. And now, I'm suprising myself waking around their downtown and I'm quite enjoying this! It isnt Montreal or Quebec city, but it is an interesting stop with lots of potential!

I'll promise myself to have a good and legit walk in downtown Moncton. For the moment, I've only did in St John in NB!

A few from recent days in St. John's...

Set to Santa Ricky singing about the other St. John's

Video Link

Toutons for breakfast...

Overheard, by some buddy picking up a cigarette butt, "Cha ching!"

Afternoon on the rooftops for pub grub and beers.

And then down on the patios...

Then, that night, for the first time in more than 500 days, we could dance in pubs/bars/clubs! So everyone went out to celebrate!
