Toronto Argonauts release quarterback Matt Nichols

I guess Nichols will try and land in Ottawa with Lapolice if Arbuckle doesn't agree to restructure his contract?

I just saw on Twitter that Arbuckle has been released and Nichols has been signed by Ottawa.

...and now it's official, Arbuckle to the Argos. Also the EEs hire Elizondo as their new HC.

Whenever the CFL resumes play, most teams are going to be unrecognizable.

Argos signed Charleston Hughes from the Riders today. Couple that with Arbuckle at QB now and signing Martavis Bryant at receiver who was very good with the Steelers 2 years ago I really like their lineup to be more competitive and hopefully be a better regular season team consistently to draw fans which the Argos haven't done consistently since the Damon Allen era of 2003-2009

Apparently the final seven choices for Edmonton

The Edmonton...

Elk
Evergreens
Evergolds
Eclipse
Elkhounds
Eagles
Elelments

The Elk seem to be the name that's been hanging around since the beginning.

I know the team was probably never in a win situation with the name change but......... yikes.......

Woof.... that's a bad list. They must be trying to direct it to a choice between Elk and Eagles without directly doing so for some reason. Like, Elkhound? Why name yourself after a dog named after another animal when the other animal is already better and simpler? Evergreens maybe, but the Evergolds has to just be a straight up joke/pun based on evergreens? Eclipse and Elements are just abstract nonsense for a sports team...

Gonna call it for Elks, its actually pretty good, unique in the world of sports, and is native to Canada at least if not the Edmonton area (don't know exactly). Eagles as a name isn't bad but has to be the most generic team name besides Bulldogs or something, not to mention there is already the NFL Eagles.

Elk is the best option imo (though they shouldn't have had to change their name in the first place...)

Elements! Elements! Elements!

Springfield Isotopes, Edmonton Elements. I am totally on board.

Calling it the Eagles is not a real option IMO... that name is taken. I realize the BC/Detroit Lions but those teams are so old and the name is so hyper-relevant to Vancouver that it gets a pass.

The only name on that list that isn't a joke is Elk. And if they are really that wedded to keeping the EE initials then it's the best option. "Edmonton Empire" was never that great a name even before it was deemed to be insufficiently sensitive.

Honestly, I could even live with them continuing to be called "EE Football Team" (but why did they go from being a "football club" to a "football team"?)

Elk is also a regionally important animal in this part of the country, and also a regal and majestic beast. It is the best option.

Woof indeed.

Elks or Eagles for me... with Elks being more contextual.

But good lord, that's the shortlist?

Energy - very surprised that was not on the list

I guess the more I think about it, many sports team names sound weird when you aren't used to them. I mean, Montreal's namesake isn't exactly the most intimidating creature:

And remember how weird REDBLACKS sounded when it was announced? We all got used to it though, and I'd even go so far as to say that it's a decent name.

Should just stick with Empire... those names suggested will damage their image

Empire was the plan... but had/has perceived negative connotations around colonization.

wish they stuck with Eskimos I still find the name honoring people of the north and a tribute to their toughness and not racist but that's just me I guess I will be labelled racist just for thinking that.

When they did extensive consultation in the north, it was quite divided as to the use of the name.

Changing the name was the right thing to do, but the team kind of boxed itself in by committing to a nickname that starts with "E"... there aren't all that many great choices it would seem.

But I'm sure after a couple of years of being the Elk it'll feel familiar, as it did with REDBLACKS.
