It's held at the LSPU Hall (I believe it's Longshoremen's Protective Union), which - together with The Ship Inn for music - is probably the arts venue in the city. The real one.

It's on Victoria Street, but it's easier to get there from the Duckworth side:

And today...

Tors Cove to Witless Bay today. It's on the Southern Shore, south of St. John's, the most densely Irish part of the island (excluding a few random towns elsewhere such as Tilting on Fogo Island).

The annual flag war is picking up ahead of Memorial Day/Canada Day on July 1. A few pics from today.

So far the Confederates are winning...

But the Nationalists are making a mark...

And some people just want peace.

And lest ye forget what this city is actually like - some news from today, lol:

Quote:
The latest series of disturbances at Mitchell Court in St. John's has neighbours angry and frightened.

Police were called to the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing development off Elizabeth Avenue on Friday evening and blocked off the street to traffic.

One witness said on Friday evening one of the new tenants was goading someone else in the neighbourhood.

"What happened was the young fella was carrying around a pole, a billy-knocker," he said. "The person he was having an issue with told him, 'Listen, I don't want to have nothing to do with you, I don't want no trouble, I just want you to go home. Just leave me alone.' And buddy kept going, and the father of the young fella kept going on and on and on."

Then a fight broke out that at its height had a dozen participants before the police arrived, he said.

"The two of them have been causing a lot of trouble in the neighbourhood and people are getting tired of it," he said. "Ever since they've been here, it's just been racket after racket after racket."

J., G. and I went to Matturday Wright Live tonight, Matt Wright's comedy show at Yellowbelly Brewery. It's stand-up, sketches, improv, and musical guests. Great time - and a lovely, lazy Sunday evening downtown.

Video Link

Walking down to Yellowbelly.

The show itself was awesome. There were four stand-up routines, four sketches, and three improv sessions. Hilarious stuff - they even brought Paddy Daly from VOCM's Open Line up on stage and one of the improv sessions was making fun of the radio show.

And from there we took a stroll along George Street for a night cap.

A fine Saturday evening downtown.

Video Link

J and I took P and E (visiting from Winnipeg) and another two Js (visiting from Toronto) to George Street to get them Screeched in.

Parked by the Anglican Cathedral and walked down.

Along Water Street...

To George Street...

The bride was accepting money from bar hoppers. Normally the bride and groom would just walk by and people would slip bills to the wedding party, but this bride was getting it herself. Also, if you want to know how cold it was today, that's a fur shawl she's got on.

The wedding was at Yellowbelly.

We walked on to Christian's for the 9 p.m. Screech in. A little early but the next one was 11:15 p.m. and one of J's guests from TO was absolutely exhausted and didn't think she'd make it that long (we warned her George Street doesn't fill up until 1ish).

They do the best one in the city. Part of the ceremony involves everyone announcing where they're from. There was actually another couple there from Winnipeg. The rest were New Zealand, England, Toronto, and one girl from Cape Breton who almost wasn't allowed to do it because that's "almost close enough".

Okay, maybe the second-best one in the city, if you're into being forced by a Montreal stripper to kiss a frozen fish.

We got cat-called BAD by the strippers outside the club. Obviously they do it to everybody, still felt nice.

Then we walked to George Street West, which is a deader end of the street.

To go to the bars in the court for a few pints. It's typically a younger crowd than I go for, but it's proper pubs and bars. None of the laser lights or dance music, which I do love, but proper St. John's nightlife, authentic. So that's what we wanted to show them.

And then back to George for a bite before bed.

Can you explain screeching? It definitely seems like a local tradition.

Probably very little of this is true but there is some background information that is historically accurate: for centuries, Jamaica was one of our most important trading partners. We would send them our salted cod, and they would send us rum. That's why salt fish is a staple in most traditional Jamaican cuisine, and why rum is synonymous with Newfoundland. That part is definitely true.

In the past, all rum was called screech here. Today, that's a specific brand name for just one type of rum. The story behind that is supposedly an American general was in St. John's and heard a man yelling, and said, "Who is making that Godawful screech?" and came the reply, "Screech? T'is the rum, me son!" And that's how people started calling it Screech. Obviously, likely untrue.

The other likely untrue part is that the fishermen would kiss their cod at the docks before it was sent south to Jamaica, from the sheer joy of knowing it would come back to them in the form of rum.

So that's the background. The ceremony is only for CFAs (Come-From-Aways, our word for any visitor not from here). They're gathered together - either in a pub, or at a wedding, or in a private home, wherever. They've given a little history lesson about Newfoundland and some of our "greatest accomplishments" (little trivia bits, basically - we invented the gas mask, had soldiers fighting with Abraham Lincoln, first responded to Titanic's distress call, yadda yadda).

Then they have to go through a few rituals intended to delight to crowd of locals watching. They'll have a bite of Newfie steak (bologna or Vienna sausages), a shot of Screech rum, and they have to kiss a cod. Then they have to recite a few lines in Newfoundland English. The Captain screeching them in usually plays this part up.

"Shortest conversation in Newfoundland? Arn s'marn? N'arn! Now, arn s'marn means "Are there any fish this morning", and N'arn means what?"
- "None?"
"No, it means, no there are not any fish this morning. Now, "hey b'y" is Newfoundland for "I agree", not to be confused with "Yes b'y", which has 1,000 different meanings. So if a Newfoundlander says something to ya and you don't understand it, sure just say "Hey b'y", because you don't want to make him repeat, he's only going to say it the same way. So then, your next phrase is how ya gettin' on me ol' cock and long may yer big jib draw!"
(Silence, until one of the CFAs catches on and says, "Hey b'y!" and everyone cheers).

On and on that goes.

Then they get certificates from the Royal Order of Screechers that name them honourary Newfoundlanders. It's a silly little tradition, really, but wildly popular.

A few pictures from a hike the day before yesterday.

Long's Hill. The buildings on the right front onto a level grade street on the opposite side.

Crazy cat/butterfly person.

Tricolour chimney up in the commercial part of Rabbittown, my neighbourhood.

Highway into the Downtown West End.

Picking crops in the Goulds.

Out in Bay Bulls. We did the short 3.5k-each-way hike out to the Bay Bulls Lighthouse.

Ate lots of blueberries and raspberries on the way.

Waved to all the ships.

To the lighthouse, where J. and I ran into another friend of mine with her two nieces. Wonderful day!

*****

A little sunrise jaunt and drive early this morning for coffee, pictured in descending order of elevation above sea level lol.

Nice update. I was in Canada this past weekend (Niagara Region), and seeing pictures of even another province brings back memories of this weekend and summers over the years.

How many Americans visit St. John's? Where do they usually come from?

Relative to our population, quite a few - enough to notice every summer. But as a number, not many at all.

In 2015, the total number of Americans who visited St. John's by car was 11,275. I can't find the statistics for air travel, which would be more common, or cruise ship travel, which all originate in Europe and would include a token number of Americans as they tend to just stop here on the way to NYC, but not many.

So I'd say overall it's probably somewhere in the area of 30,000.

I usually see New York and Massachusetts plates. Sometimes the Carolinas and Vermont. Arizona is also REALLY common (at least once a week, even in winter) but only on U-haul trucks so I assume they have some sort of head office there.

We went for a walk along the Grand Concourse (urban trail system that covers basically all of St. John's, mostly along little rivers) to Kent's Pond.

Video Link

Started with a run to Belbin's.

Rennie's River is one of the main branches of the Grand Concourse. It moves away from downtown toward Pippy Park.

There are a few places where you have to cross a suburban street, but mostly it's a riverside trail.

The worst crossing is Prince Phillip Parkway between Memorial University and the Confederation Building.

Kent's Pond.

The Rooms on the horizon.

The genetics research facility.

The adjacent children's hospital.

The other side of Kent's Pond.

Random university buildings.

Almost back home to J.'s place.
