The U.S. Cities Where Airlines See the Most Growth

https://www.wsj.com/articles/airport...am-11619536100

A few highlights:

"Already, the June schedule shows Austin with almost as many airline seats as were offered in June 2019, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. Total seat counts for the four largest airlines will still be down 17% compared with two years ago. Delta is trying to build a small hub in Austin, calling it one of its “focus cities,” while American and Southwest are responding with a wave of their own flights."

...Delta, which added nine gates and a Sky Club in Austin just before the pandemic, is up 3% in flights for June compared with June 2019, even though the airline is down 23% in flights overall, according to Cirium.

...“This is the right time for airlines to ask for more gates, before our 34 gates get occupied completely again,” says Jacqueline Yaft, chief executive officer of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport."

Routes to begin during summer 2021:

AUSTIN, Texas — Austinites are getting a few more vacation options this summer as new nonstop flight options arrive at Austin's airport.

On Wednesday, both American Airlines and Spirit Airlines announced new nonstop flights from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. As travel rates begin to peak once more, these airlines are hoping to grow their flight networks back to original size by the summer.

American Airlines celebrated the inaugural flights of four out of the 10 new routes it plans to launch from Austin, this Thursday.

A very useful route for me since I have family 4 hours South of Monterrey and they lack any commercial air service (just a flight to MEX). Can't say the fare will be better than from SAT though, or if other routes end up being as cheap.

Another important factor is time, but I guess they haven't announced that yet.

Flew out of ABIA on Saturday, for the first time since December 2019. About half of the shops and restaurants were still closed. This was mid afternoon.

There were plenty of people but not the usual crowd. If you've ever been there for a very early departure, you've seen it slower than I saw on Saturday.

Things seem to be running quite well there. Encouraging.

You can already book flights starting in mid June. Both flights are in the mornings on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We'll probably book our first this weekend.

Just got back from ATL and jeez, ABIA was bumpin! I bet our numbers will just go up, up, UP from here on out. Made me actually a bit misty eyed. Now we just need BA back!

I think they have reopened the parking lots due to the increased traffic.

Again...sadly...opening a booking does not guarantee a boarding on said flight. I've had two Paris flights cancelled, by the airline, in the past few months due to border issues.

BA has tried several times since last October to reopen the route. However, and obviously, COVID has made that very difficult.

I hope it truly opens up by September.

Totally correct.

It is ALL dependent on when the US gets added to the UK's green list of travel corridors. The UK borders opened two days ago for leisure travel to a very small handful of places (Portugal is really the only holiday destination), and even today there has been a domestic row over some ministers describing travel as essential and others saying that nobody should be leaving the country "for the foreseeable."

So...it's a mess. All reliant on the trendlines of cases and vaccinations continuing the right trajectory in America AND this Indian variant in the UK not sidetracking plans to unlock. FWIW - being an American living in the UK (and having visited Austin back in March) I am sick of the UK government's overly cautious approach here, especially when it appears that vaccines are 97% effective against this variant they're so concerned about...

Nothing to do but wait, though.

Just a FYI: based on this week...

OAG Schedules Analyser figures show that weekly capacity between the US and the UK is currently about 84,000 two-way seats—just 15% of the total available during the same week in 2019.
