I didn't know about this great statue of D.K. in Huntington Beach! I did know there was one of him on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii.

The wiki page also list some films he appeared in. I'd seen one of them a few times before, but I don't recall knowing he was in it. He played a Native Chief in the 1955 film Mister Roberts.

When I was in Hawaii (early December that year) the USPS had a stamp of Duke Kahanamoku out and I used it on all the mail I sent out from there...postcards (even though first class) and Hawaiian Christmas cards!

Curious...in several places, websites, I was looking at awhile ago, including the story link you provided, they say the USPS stamp of Kahanamoku was issued by the post office in 2002. I used it in December of 2001. (Postmarks to prove it.)

Just a guess, but I think limited-edition stamps are dated and maybe they are released early like cars. So the 'class of 2002' might have been out before the actual year of 2002 started.

I saw this the other day while snooping around the intertubes. (I don't recall seeing it on nla)

Well, the street is Broadway. The marquee in the foreground is for the Cameo Theater. (note: the Million Dollar Theater appears much closer than it actually is)

I know we have gone over this in the past...but here's a brief history.

"Opened as Clune’s Broadway Theatre October 10, 1910, it was an original nickelodeon theatre
and is a rare example to survive today almost unaltered. Its operator William H. (Billy) Clune
was an early pioneer film producer and exhibitor. Architect Alfred F. Rosenheim
designed a Beaux-Arts interpretation of Italian Renaissance Revival style. Its original roof-top electric sign
and ‘digital’ clock were Downtown landmarks for many years. In 1925 until 1926
it was operated by Universal Pictures chain and renamed Cameo Theatre. In the late-1920’s
it was operated by H.L. Gumbiner (who soon was to build the Tower Theatre and Los Angeles Theatre
further along South Broadway) who replaced the sign and clock with a large 24-sheet billboard."

Historic Los Angeles Theaters also has a great page for Clune's / Cameo with many early images, like the one below.

It's a special favorite. I'm glad it's still standing. When the Cameo closed in the early 90s it was the longest continuously-operating movie theater in California.

found on ebay.

At first glance I thought that diagonal 'structure' on the right was an external exit for Morosco's Burbank Theater.

but actually, it appears to be on the side of the J.F. Granas store.

And before I go...I have to mention the lady darting across the street.

It's little details, like this running lady, that make spur of the moment photos so darn amazing.

It makes me feel like I was there for a brief moment) witnessing this.

Looks like maybe grandstands have been erected....the lamp post is decorated...perhaps a parade is nigh? Great picture!

Morosco didn't take over the Burbank until 1899. I'm going to guess that the grandstand was built for La Fiesta...perhaps for the one coinciding with McKinley's May 1901 visit. Here's an image part of that parade, one with another grandstand. Caption reads: "May 9, 1901: Carriage carrying Pres. William McKinley turns north on Broadway at 6th Street during La Fiesta Parade." Bradford Hulse was at 212 W Sixth....

ER, I see what looks like a Ford Model N runabout (1906-1908) in front of the big wagon in the center and behind the streetcar. The womens' fashions looks like from about that era. But the I noticed the last five letters of the name "Rosslyn" on the building in the distance on the left. Could that be the Hotel Rosslyn (1914)? I'm puzzled.

That would be the old Rosslyn, would it not?--on the lot just north on Main from where the new Rosslyn would be built.

I noticed there's a small house directly behind the bleachers.

I wonder if the owner of the house owned the corner lot as well.

The Rosslyn started out as the Hotel Lindsay...its earliest appearance in the CD was in the 1898 issue, same year as the name change....

I have the best memories of my youth at the Hollywood Roller Bowl. Live organist, disc jokey, colored lamps, pretty girls, the soda fountain. Great times. Later became the Orrin Tucker ballroom. It was not on a movie lot. It was west of the old 20th Century Fox lot at Sunset and Western.
