Wow, it was a year ago when I wrote that in response to a comment from 2 years ago by cjreisen. I think I was just trying to bump the thread with my uninformed response

I was really just talking about present times, not historic (because that's what cj was asking about). And it was just a guess, based on total population across total city size. I did some quick math this time around, and it looks like Columbus would come in second of the three, with a simple population / area ratio -

City...............Population......Area...............Density
Columbus.......905,748.........226 sq. mi......4,008 / sq. mi.
Cleveland.......372,624..........82 sq. mi.......4,544 / sq. mi
Cincinnati.......309,317..........80 sq. mi.......3,866 / sq. mi

So you're right - not the most-dense, at least at the city level, because Columbus is nearly 3x the size of each of the other two cities.

P.S. - Go Blue!

Without updated Urban Areas it'd be more apt to compare core counties.

County...........Population......Area...........Density............%Δ since 2010
Cuyahoga.......1,264,817......457.19mi²...2,767ppsm......(-1.2%)
Franklin..........1,323,807......532.19mi²...2,485ppsm......(+13.7%)

Hamilton County isn't really apples-to-apples for Cincinnati. Wish they'd hurry up with updated Urbanized Area statistics.

Here's the full downtown aerial. Tons of stuff going on. It appears it's from about mid-summer this year.

Intel planning to build massive new semiconductor factory in Ohio

"Intel is the company that has decided to build a major new computer-chip factory in the Columbus, Ohio area in what could be the largest economic development project in state history, according to sources."

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2022/...y-in-ohio.html

https://www.cleveland.com/open/2022/...r-factory.html

https://www.oregonlive.com/business/...outputType=amp

Earlier Intel talked about wanting a major location of multiple fabs, creating a mini city with investment in the $100-150B range. Not sure if this is that or simply a single fab in the $10-20B range. Either way it's huge for New Albany, Ohio State, Columbus, and Ohio!

This would be located among many other large businesses. Google, Amazon, and FacebookMeta data centers, Abercrombie & Fitch HQ, Big Lots HQ, AEP Transmission HQ, Bob Evans HQ, and an Amgen Pharmaceuticals production facility currently under construction. Also, many smaller warehouse and production facilities. Amgen, Google, and Meta each own 300-500 acres. Amgen specifically stated they would like to bring offices here in addition to their production facility. Wouldn't be surprised if Google and Meta do so as well.

New Albany is the most affluent suburb of Columbus with a median housing list price of $840k. The median list price in Columbus proper is $153k!

Great news! That prompted me to check out Columbus a little bit in google street view, and oh my god, development along high street goes on and on and on for miles on end. I didn't know how much Columbus has evolved in a decade, truly amazing.

I wonder if it is still affordable.

Still affordable for now. Supply is not nearly meeting demand for going on 15 years now.

Here's High Street in the Short North:

There have been several articles over the past few days about planning for a potential Amtrak station in Columbus.

"COLUMBUS, Ohio — A study released by the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority details where an Amtrak station would go if the rail service expands to Columbus.

The possibility of a passenger train line connecting Ohio’s main cities has become a hot topic over the past year. Now, the Greater Columbus Passenger Rail Station Survey is bringing that possibility to life..."

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has $66B in funding for rail. We'll see what clowns are elected at the state-level and whether they are hostile to investing in passenger rail.

Confirmation on Intel's plans. First phase is $20 billion, 3,000 Intel jobs. Full build out could reach $100 billion. Construction to start this year with factory commissioning by 2025. Multiple ancillary developments are already announced by Air Products, Applied Materials, LAM Research, and Ultra Clean Technology. Intel investing $100 million in regional university semiconductor programs, specifically citing Ohio State's Innovation District.

Columbus is still very busy building stuff. I apologize I come infrequently to SSP but I have another forum I have to run (UrbanOhio) so...yeah. The 410ft Ohio State Hospital (tallest building outside of downtown) is coming along and the 361ft Hilton Columbus Tower is damn-near done. There are a billion yuppie boxes (aka 4-7 story residential buildings) going up everywhere, from city to the burbs like this isht going WAAAAAY out in Buckeye Lake...

https://columbusunderground.com/idea...keye-lake-bw1/

...and then there's these types of yuppie boxes going up everywhere. Not pleased by them but whatever.

...though this stuff is slightly-better...

https://columbusunderground.com/51-u...d-in-2021-bw1/

...still a box though...

https://columbusunderground.com/315-...n-village-bw1/

Disney-by-the-Bus Shelter?

https://columbusunderground.com/new-...-downtown-bw1/

End. Less. Food. Halls.

https://columbusunderground.com/new-...velopment-sp1/

...but this stuff I'm pleased about...

Merchant Tower - 382 feet (u/c this summer)

https://columbusunderground.com/new-...ket-tower-bw1/

Hubbard Tower in the Short North - ??? feet but it's nice so whatever

https://columbusunderground.com/12-s...ort-north-bw1/

Peninsula Tower in Franklinton - ??? feet but it'll be the tallest residential tower outside of downtown so I'll take it, for now...

https://columbusunderground.com/34-s...peninsula-bw1/

This gap-filler called 100 N. High St will finally get rid of annoying gap downtown.

https://columbusunderground.com/15-s...-downtown-bw1/

Ohio State has so much money they are building a new fcking campus across from the old campus. Ya know, "Innovation District" stuff. Probably Google, Intel, and the METAVERSE. It's under-construction now and is insane to watch.

https://columbusunderground.com/deve...-and-more-bw1/

Franklinton (neighborhood) has gone full-on Portland-4-Lyfe with projects left and right that are "sustainable" and "eco-friendly" and "hipster artisanal chicken." Gravity Phase III is an example of what's going on over there:

https://columbusunderground.com/thir...ad-street-bw1/

AND PARKS! Columbus has like 5 rivers (okay, 2 really and 3 creeks) and we're going to out-Austin Austin btches!!!

And is that a mini-condo tower over a 1980's resto with bad bread and French fries?

https://columbusunderground.com/plan...corridors-bw1/

Anywhoot, Columbus has like 71 projects u/c alone in the OLD city limits (51 square miles) and I'm not even thinking about what's outerbelt, which is, ya know, alot.

These days, Columbus is just "too busy to hate."
