Weirdly, I was hoping it would look more like this initially lol. I was kind of disappointed by the reddish paneling when I first saw the renderings - was sort of hoping for a sleek black look, but the red kind of grew on me so I guess I’m back to being disappointed with what I first wanted.

I think it's always good to take a step back and be reminded of what this building has replaced--a parking garage long past its prime: https://goo.gl/maps/eXp63xZp2CcQnKso9

My intent is not to criticize the critics; design details do matter. But they should also bear in mind the context of this building easily rectifying the bastardized streetscape by about 1,000-fold, and that's HUGE for a street like Sansom.

Agree. Disappointing to lose elements like the terrace cutout and balconies (helps make the building less boxy), but this is still an awesome project and majorly improves that block of Sansom.

And I'm happy that Southern Land Co. is investing in Philadelphia. I wish they purchased the arson hole on Walnut St. instead of that no-name Brooklyn developer.

^They've proven they can do historic facade reconstruction and incorporation into a larger project over at the Laurel. Really a no brainer, if they can get their hands on it.

^ OT, but if 1919 Market were twice the height, it would fill the gap between The Laurel and Blue Cross Building really well.

True.

In general though, all these 300ftish buildings (Somi, Jessup 3151 Market, new Jeff building, etc.) are really filling in that base of the skyline. It's nice when you can't see the first 15 floors of any trophy tower.

(Jawn, I hope you don't mind that I snipped your photo!)

^ O definitely. All these buildings add a layering effect, an important trait for a great skyline.

One of the many reasons why Philadelphia has one of the best skylines in the country.

Philadelphia skyline from Citizens Bank Park by Philly SkyGuy, on Flickr

Camera, enhance

Looks to be topped out. But the concrete bulkhead was shown to be above the roof, either it's not completely topped yet or hopefully they removed the random concrete block from the top

Ok, looking back at the plans and renderings it looks like they put a whole floor on the top instead of the bulkhead

I know we've had a lot of shots of this one of late, but it shows pretty nicely from way up Sansom

Somi 1620 topped out by Philly SkyGuy, on Flickr

Seeing it in person, I kinda like the change of cladding on overcast days. Perhaps it was done to "match" Liberty Place, but there's so much brick and old architecture in the area I think the original version still should've been built.

Somi 1620 from City Hall by Philly SkyGuy, on Flickr

Based on recent photos, it also appears that the shape of the top of the tower has changed from the original renderings. There is another floor on top and the concrete bulkhead (thankfully) is shorter. Had to update the 3d model to see how it will look, but I still might need to touch it up
