Parkades

I guess they don't have to be ugly!

Metro Park on Salter could stand a little lipstick on a pig!

Anyone else know of cool and funky ones that would inspire better designs locally?

Kansas City's Central Library is covered in giant book ends, which makes the parkade attached to it stand out, if only by association.

Some lower floors of the Roy are parking and they look nice.

The stuff around Salter Street shows how much architecture in the city has improved compared to 2000 or so. The MetroPark, the hotel across the street, and Salter's Gate are all way below the average of today (with Salter's Gate being the somewhat later and somewhat nicer project).

I like the Market Garage near the Byward Market in Ottawa, could be a good place to park one's bear

I also like the weaved look of the parkade at the airport.

Bring 'em on! Halifax could use more parkades, especially if they are attractive ones! Fill in the surface lots (mostly being done already) and build parking up!

FWIW, I wouldn't be upset if they added a bunch more parkades and eliminated streetside parking in the downtown altogether!

I like what they have done at the Roy.. Street front stores, parking above that, then Apartments/Condos.... Just building parkades seems so wasteful, as does just retail without having use of the air above, by building density....

Ideally I prefer when a building is built for a purpose, but includes extra underground parking accessible to the public - seems the most efficient use of the land, plus public parking should help pay the bills a little.

So... parking, retail, office and/or residential, rooftop restaurant - that's my ideal for downtown.

Reducing streetside parking benefits most everybody - it's better for bike lanes, can allow for wider sidewalks without penalty to car traffic, and can also allow wider lanes for motorized traffic - it's even better for snow clearing. The only caveat is that there should be some way to allow for handicap parking spaces in areas where underground parking is unavailable.

Whether parking is above ground... or not, the main thing is to maximize usage of a lot. Just building a parkade is not too productive for the area it covers.
