George Lucas to announce architects for lakefront museum
By Blair Kamin, Tribune critic
July 28, 2014

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas on Monday will announce an architectural team for his controversial planned museum on Chicago's lakefront: an avant-garde Chinese designer whose credits include Toronto-area skyscrapers dubbed the "Marilyn Monroe Towers" and Chicago's Jeanne Gang, shaper of the undulating Aqua Tower here.

Ma Yansong, founder of the Beijing firm MAD Architects, will design the building for Lucas' Museum of Narrative Art. Gang, who heads Studio Gang Architects, will conceive the landscape around the building and design a pedestrian bridge linking the museum to Northerly Island, a peninsula east of the museum site.
Fucking sick.

MAD's work is pure genius. Along with Gang nonetheless. Best news I've read in years.

Greatness is coming...

Okay, I think we can put to bed all the fears that we would get something traditional like that Mission Revival rendering from SF.

I'm not intimately familiar with MAD's work but it seems like a lot of their recent proposals, especially for cultural projects, tend to be low-slung bulbous designs that blur the line between building and topography. It's pretty clear to me that a landform is what Lucas is looking for here in line with his principle of minimal impact to nature (I wonder if he's aware that the entire lakefront is an artificial zone?)

I honestly cannot wait to see what the design is. MAD's work is honestly some of my favorite out there. I wish they and Gang and co could team up to completely transform ALL of the museum campus and NI for the better.

So excited. Fuck.

I knew it! I said from the beginning I thought Gang was going to be involved. I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Dazzling potential. Shrewd move by Lucas.

Yes, he'll sell the building as terraform sculpture, to assuage the Chicago Plan Commission & to de-claw the Lakefront Protection Ordinance. He appears to have done his homework.

Nice. It's going to be quite the bridge; either very high or at least possess some kind of drawbridge functionality to accommodate the harbor's many sailboats.

Cal's Liquor

Does anyone know what's going on with the old Cal's Liquor store at Van Buren & Wells? They've had it boarded up from a while but now it looks like they've added a second story to it.

^^^ I believe it is to be turned into a restaurant.

Studio Gang + MAD is a dream team. They have very similar philosophies and I think the result will certainly be amazing in all respects. I'm hoping they go high with the bridge and that it is an extension of the building itself. The skyline views a high bridge at that location would enable would be absolutely stunning. Does MAD have any other major completed works in the US or is this a Milwaukee Art Museum moment for them?

Pritzker's massive parking garage. From DNAinfo: http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140...parking-garage

Along that note, what's the tower crane up in east Lakeview? I've noticed it from a couple rooftops further west the past couple months. It appears to be between Diversey and Belmont, east of Clark.

That would be the 8ish-storey "St Joseph Hospital Expansion." Google for renders. Speaking of cranes popping up, I drove through the U of C campus last week and it currently has 3. I think one is for that large research facility. Anyone care to enlighten us?

No, their only previous work in the US was a proposal for the WTC site that looked too much like a cloud of smoke. Those sexy Canadian towers are their only built work in North America.

Looks like a Uniqlo employee posted the press release on Reddit:
http://www.reddit.com/r/malefashiona...ng_to_chicago/

Looks like it will be located at 830 North Michigan Avenue

This is awesome news. I have some Uniqlo stuff from when I was in Kuala Lumpur last year. They make some nice, quality stuff that is not terribly expensive. Is this going in the old Filene's Basement space or has that already been filled? My initial thought was it was going in the Plaza Escada, but I don't think that is 830 N Michigan? I could be wrong though.
