The Colony Club was real enough. The coin is probably just a souvenir and advertising gag.

BTW Candy Barr used to "dance" there on occasion.

You might reasonably question his conclusions but I don't think you can mount much of an attack on his scholarship. At least no one has to this point. Not Heise nor Robinson.

I might also call your attention to page 315 of this thread, there is a bit of a discussion on this subject between E_R and RickM. Interesting stuff. By the way, my copy of Tarnished Angels which I found a couple of months ago weighed in at $75. ouch.

Wow.
Check out these links regarding early Italian immigrants, wine making and prostitution in early Los Angeles.
I want to learn more about this guy Bartolo Ballerino.

Good price actually. I believe I just saw one selling through Amazon for about $170 and another for $90. I envy your acquisition.

Heading over to page 315 now....thanks.

EDIT:
LOL. I just posted that link too. I can see we're both on the same trail here.

The Octoroon was at 438 N. Alameda.
Who wins the prize? E_R?

Rick_M said " Mme. Bollanger, Cora Phillips and the notable Pearl Morton were prime players."

California State University Pomona

As far as the legitimacy of the tokens go, I'm not so sure now.
The "Octoroon" tokens are listed among the fantasy tokens.

...and so you did. The prize is yours, sir!

EDIT:
On your post: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=8645

The top two token photos look authentic and the bottom two look faux.

The complete CSU Pomona text on prostitution text, as E_R posted earlier, is here:

I forgot to thank you for going through the trouble of scanning and posting those pages from Wasted Dreams nailing the (my misguided) Octoroon question.

Thanks and you at least have my undying appreciation and respect.

Civic Center

Saw this in the Times this morning and it made me think of Sopas ej's post from a few years ago:

You're welcome, of course. I was trying not to be too pedantic but thought the Octoroon should get its due. I'm planning/hoping to eventually post a longish treatment of the red light district, ladies of the evening, houses of ill-fame and the like. But it is surprising how little pictorial material survives. But I am slowly collecting things I think will be of interest.

Excellent post with pictures i have not seen before, which has fueled me more so to ask about the funicular, "Court Flight" are there any sources to search for photos in the late 50's when the small hill was getting ready to be shaved and what about the old Broadway Hotel next to the tracks. I see the photos taken at the top of old Hall of records but the view is obstructed from seeing soon to be former Court Flight. Thanks.

I would love to see this too. It's too bad the camera wasn't tilted further downward on the 1951 pic above. I believe right there in the bottom left corner is the street at the top of Court Flight - you can see the railing where the street ends. The incline for Court flight is literally just out of frame.

Always really liked this Ansel Adams shot. Nearly a reverse angle of that last pic.

court street terminus at court flight, ca. 1940
Ansel Adams

And since it's quiet around here I'll hop back in and add this image. Back in February (Feb 4, 2012, page 317, post no. 6324), FredH posted four of these very dramatic nighttime shots. I was taken with how they added an entirely new kind of depth to such familiar surroundings. This particular image closely approximates the view we are looking at...and yes, Court Flight can be seen

nighttime cityscape from city hall tower looking west, WWII dimout, 1943

And if my eyes don't deceive me, there across Broadway just to the right of the Hall of Records, the little boxy building is Joe's Cafe.

Los Angeles panorama, 1910

I liked those last two images from KevinW's and sopas ej's post so much, I thought I'd go ahead and marry them as it seemed apparent they were taken at the same time and may very well have been originally a panorama anyway.

View from City Hall

Nice work Kevin...and all the rest of you as well.

What I take away from this is that over 100 years they have turned the central city from a bustling, dense American downtown, with a not-overwhelming scale (none of the buildings were oppressively big, of course, thanks to the 150 foot rule) into......

....something like an overgrown Warner Center.
