I'm telling you: just imagine looking out round the full 360 degree vantage point from the Top of the Rock a decade from now. It won't even seem real...

It will be like a different city. The beauty of the railyards in particular is that that development alone is better than most skylines. Not many cities can say that.

6 years ago, who would have thought? Its amazing, and I'm loving every minute of it.

Manhattan (the inspiration for Asimov's vision of the World City, Trantor, in his Foundation series) is about to become the veritable ocean of skyscraper construction, and judging by the quality of the proposals we've seen to date, the epicenter of cutting edge design.

Roman-style orgy of self-congratulations at My House, tomorrow night at 11:00! Togas required. Dac - you bring the chips; I got beer and soda covered.

Now... let's hope Extell will release soon an equally extraordinary design to compliment Nouvel's brilliant MOMA icon across the street from the Carnegie Hall/Metropolitan towers Extell will have no choice but to release a momumental proposal if they want to compete

Wow... the thought of another momumental icon rising in between Nouvel and Foster near central park is beyond... words Remember this old Frank Williams design?

However, rumor has it that Portzamparc MAY be the new architect... let's hope

Well hopefully we don't have to wait long to see Extell's proposal... pray it's Portzamparc... if so... he'll match or better Nouvel's design so maybe another 1000+ footer? Anyone know what the max sq footage, air rights, etc. are for W. 57th plot across from Carnegie Hall?

I'd have to check the info in the thread again, but it's closer to Central Park, so a 1,000 footer there would definitely be a tall order.

Jean Nouvel's design of the Tower Verre in New York City

With his design for the Tower Verre, Jean Nouvel proposes to take the strict
respect of the zoning envelope to the point where its shape becomes the
tower itself. Governed by its legal envelope and the steel framing needed to
withstand the wind loads, this structure is as unique and singular as the
parcel it stands on. From close up, its receding stealth geometry makes it
surprisingly discrete and unobtrusive for its height. Seen from Central Park,
the bridges and most locations on the river banks, its triangular silhouette
stands out and is very recognizable in the Manhattan skyline, inscribing the
MoMA unmistakably as one of New York’s most famous and successful
cultural institutions.
The façades of the tower are a structural glazing in
standard glass dimensions and the bracing structure follows the simplest and
most economical geometry. Living inside this building feels like inhabiting a
power fully present and reassuring structure, similar to that of a large tree.
The tower draws its shape from the desire for more daylight in the streets
and the same daylight feeds its solar panels with energy. Its character is the
structural expression of the wind bracing and the same wind moves its
Aeolian turbines. The solar panels and wind turbines fill the narrow triangular
top section, putting its unusually thin silhouette to a reasonable use.
This
tower is a monument to the rules of shadow and light, and to the forces of the wind.

The first time I saw the design, I remembered Child's original FT concept. And now here we are, with a proposal with turbines at the top...

I didn't notice the subtle variation of the top section cladding.

NEW YORK NY Average wind speed is 9.3mph in central park, take in mind the wind turbine will be located 1000 feet above the ground, BOA building was going to have a wind turbine as well....

I'm still not sure about the wind turbine thing. In the renderings, it doesn't look open at the top. We'll see.

Yesterday, in Le Figaro :

Quote:
L’architecte français a dessiné un spectaculaire immeuble fuselé pour New York. Voisin du MoMA, il devrait s’élancer à 350 mètres à la fin 2011.
... it should reach 350 m (1148 ft) and be completed by the end of 2011.
However, the height figure is probably approximative.

For those who can read french :

Thanks. A tower of that size won't take as long to complete as some of the major office towers, so even with a 2009 start, 2011 is a reasonable completion target. And 1,148 ft is a good height, a little higher than expected.

Am I the only one who thinks that this tower resembles Frank L. Wrights Mile High Tower. At least from this angle (minus the exposed superstructure of course).

The real beauty of the height is that it's over 1,000' to the roof. Also, I like the fact that it'll balance out the skyline with the ESB to the South.

the only more beautiful than the outside of this tower is the inside. the render of the lobby and the swimming pool with the support beams all over the place looked awesome. so many interior and exterior renders and over a year from start of construction. are you paying attention to that mr gehry?
