Germans living in Brașov were mainly involved in trade and crafts. The location of the city at the intersection of trade routes linking the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe, together with certain tax exemptions, allowed Saxon merchants to obtain considerable wealth and exert a strong political influence. They contributed a great deal to the architectural flavor of the city.

You've got to be careful, though - Western European descriptions of admirable things in Eastern Europe are usually reminiscent of Ancient Aliens - "there's no way they did that."

It's a bit like white supremacists holding up white marble statues as... something... when in ancient times they were painted tacky as fuck.

Not every place in Germany was a bombed-out husk after WW2. Especially not the small medieval centres that had no industrial or strategic value and most resemble the Romania picture.

Sighisoara is my fave city in Romania - I've not been, I just mean in terms of the pics I've seen.

Which reminds me - not Romania, not Bosnia - but one of the most fascinating cities I've become aware of (not Tbilisi):

Booking.com
Well that one took me a few minutes longer than the Romania one and it was a bit of a stretch how I got there lol.

The aesthetic looks pretty similar to Romania, but the building in the bottom right kind of said mosque to me with the archways. Figured the monument out front was the best discerning feature so I googled "Albania obelisk" as the Muslim Balkan country, but nothing came up. Went to "Bulgaria obelisk" next and this picture of the "Monument of Bulgarian Kings" was halfway down the page. So it looks like its Veliko Tarnovo which I have never heard of. Looks very interesting though. I love old towns built along hillsides.

AWESOME job! And yes I was even going to hint that thing on the hills looks SO Albanian but it's not.

Speaking of which - Berat and Gjirokastra. Google'em. GORGEOUS hilly towns in Albania.

Canadian tourism ad on Facebook, but clicking the link doesn't reveal the location. I honestly can't guess where this is. The shopfront architecture is Toronto, but I don't know a street like that there. Anyone?

In A History of Violence the main character drives to a strip joint in "Philadelphia" which is obviously somewhere in Toronto with a streetcar line. But I can't place it. Anybody?

Ok, so I cheated.

Queen East

I did have the general location and used street view - it looked very Queen East to me. I just couldn't get the specific location though as I thought the street was too built up as one got towards the DVP.

Then again, 2005 was 16 years ago.

Thanks. The 2007 Street View image has the old bar/hotel that's in the movie.

Funny thing, before I even checked the filming locations I could tell right from the beginning, where they show a pleasantly rolling country road amidst the trees, that the movie was made somewhere in rural Ontario (aside from that one trip into "Philadelphia").

I am absolutely bragging here because I'm really proud of myself. I was looking at Youtube on my phone and saw a new upload from GeoWizard, who I subscribe to and who many of you would enjoy. I looked at this thumbnail and immediately said to myself "that's [redacted], NB". It took me about five seconds to spot what took the Englishman many minutes. Anybody else know it without watching the video?

^From the west Toronto rail path looking east down Bloor st. So the cross st up front would be Perth.

And just down the street from arguably Toronto's grimmest intersection. Funny, I've been through there dozens of times, but somehow I couldn't recognize it in this pic.

I'm a bit ashamed to say that I cannot place this North American skyline in a random internet photo. I'll go "d'oh" when the answer is given.

Where is this?
