Some history on the site. The NCC sold the land bordered by La Cité, Carrefour, Montée Paiement and the train tacks to the old City of Gatineau in 1996 for $1. One condition was imposed: any profits from reselling the land would have to go to the revitalization of rue Jacques-Cartier in Pointe-Gatineau.
The City sold three corners of land: where the
Home Depot and
Bureau en Gros now stand (2001) and the space for the Federal office building and Brookfield office building (2003).
When la La Cité was chosen, the City claims the politicians were informed of this clause from 96', but some Councillors say they won't such as opponents of the Mayor. In any case, work on Jacques-Cartier was completed by then.
