A long planning committee meeting on Thursday was marked by several approvals for tall buildings outside of the downtown core.
All developers won committee approvals for their projects, though one application drew larger-than-usual opposition from members.
Council will consider the committee’s recommendations on July 21.

Tower in Billings Bridge area would replace mechanic, fast-food restaurant
A new plan to redevelop a property in the Billings Bridge area with a high-rise received the committee’s full support.
A mechanic shop and Harvey’s restaurant is on the site today at 1335-1339 Bank St., at Riverside Drive.
The applicant, Lofty Riverside GP, needs official plan and zoning amendments to build its 26-storey project. There would be 326 residential units and 65 additional units acting as a boutique hotel. There would also be commercial space.
Despite the proposed increased building height, the density currently allowed on the property is actually more than what the developer is planning.
Representing the development firm, Kevin McMahon told councillors a high-rise as a community gateway node could be a “catalyst for change” in an area with high development interest.
The Alta Vista Community Association wanted the committee to defer a decision until its concerns were addressed. The group’s concerns include traffic management, pedestrian and cycling safety on the Billings Bridge and lack of recreation space.
